1st Trimester

Lifting Heavy Objects During 1st Trimester

What is everyone's thoughts on lifting in the 1st trimester? I know the general consensus is no lifting anything over 10-20 lbs later on in pregnancy, mostly due to ligaments being stretched out and the risk of tearing them and also your center of gravity being off due to the bump.... but I havent heard much about lifting in the 1st trimester.

Reason I'm asking: I'm required to do minimal heavy lifting in my job (probably around 30 lbs, twice a week). I'm not telling anyone at work that I'm pregnant yet since it's so early, but I'm questioning whether it is safe for me to be doing so.

Obviously I'll talk to my midwife when I see her next, but thought I'd throw it out there to you guys too.

  • I routinely lift two 40 lbs children and so far so good. I don't plan on stopping until I have to.  I think lifting 30 lbs 1-2x a week is ok as long as it feels ok to your body.

  • That's probably fine for now. I just asked my OB this question yesterday because we're moving in about a month. She said as long as I'm not straining to lift something, I'm OK at this point in the pregnancy.

  • My understanding is that it's fine to continue whatever you're used to doing, as long as it doesn't bother you.

  • I'm fine with carrying my 25lbs toddler around but said no to my husband who wanted me to help move a big screen TV around.  I had someone else help on that.
  • It can't hurt the baby.  The reason they give you the lifting guideline is so you don't hurt yourself.  If you feel fine doing it, I'd say it's okay for now.

  • If you have been doing it then I would continue to do it (making sure you do it correctly) and I don't see any issue with it.

I weight lifted my whole pregnancy last time and plan to this time and definitely didn't stick to 10-20 lbs, my toddler weighs more than that!

  • DS is 26 lbs. I have to lift all the time....uppiedown mommy! With my first pg I didn't lift anything. Now it's unavoidable. You wil be wine once or twice a week, If you have a rolling chair, lift it onto the chair and push it. It won't be as bad.

  • I was teaching gymnastics when I was pregnant with DS and my MW had no issue with my moving equiptment, spotting skills, and being available to lift kids up to middle school in case of emergancy during the 1st tri.  At the 2nd she said no more than 20 lbs, which took me out of teaching.
