Only naps 1 hour and 40 minutes every day!

What can I do to make it longer?  He wakes at 7:00 and usually is very ready to go sleep around 12:45 or 1:00.  He is always up in less than two hours.  What can I do to prolong it?  He is always so cranky by dinner time that it makes the evening not very fun.  He is 16 months and just went down to one nap.  He used to nap 1 hour in the am and 1.5 hours in the afternoon.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • I don't really think there is anything you can do about it.  What time does he go down at night?  If he's getting 11-13 hours of sleep he's fine.  Dinner time is usually a fussy time for kids.

My kids did fine with the transition to one nap.  But my oldest just transitioned to no naps and it was a nightmare...and not just at dinnertime.

  • Sounds like he's dropping a nap, which is pretty normal. DD sleeps about 2 hours around noon to 2 and that's it for the day.

Have you tried some quiet time or a snack in the afternoon/early evening? That seems to help DD.

  • DD is 16 months and takes a 1.5 hour nap daily too.  It's just part of the transition from 2 naps to 1 nap.

  • DD2 takes a one hour to hour-and-a-half nap daily as well.  She sometimes still takes a morning nap, but if she does that, each nap is about 30 minutes to an hour.  Not all babies sleep 2-3 solid hours.

  • I would just be lucky you are getting 1h 40m because some ladies on  here would KILL for that long.

    Sounds totally normal to me.

  • That's a good, solid nap for the one-hour nap schedule.  What would I do with 1 hour and 40 minutes to myself?  Oh my goodness, the possibilities!

All perfectly normal and just time for mom to adjust.

  • DS use to do this too, and we started just laying him right back down. We told him nap time is not over yet. He would get up some but eventually just went back to sleep. We only did this because he would wake up still cranky, so we knew he was not getting a long enough nap. At that age though, DS was still taking two naps a day and did not go to one nap a day until he went to daycare (they only do one nap). He's still napping about 2-3 hours a day. If he wakes up in a bad mood I will just lay him back down.

  • Sounds like how my DD was.  By age 2 she was napping 30 minutes tops and nothing at all by 2.5

  • I'll say it too..normal.   Try distractions or earlier supper, or something to get out of the fussies...Everyone will adjust soon enough...and then it will change again. :-)  What time does he go to bed at night?  As pp said, 11-13 hours is plenty for a 16 month old.
Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!
  • I'm jealous.  My daughter slept less than an hour today and she had two naps! She averages 1.5-2 hours of naps broken up between two every day. It's better than three 30 minute naps. I don't have any advice other than there's nothing I've tried that's worked. It's more what your baby needs. Oh, my daughter sleeps anywhere from 11-12 hours at night.
