DSLR gals

I need some help & I'm going to start here first b/c so many of you have DSLRs from the post a few weeks back.  Way back when we had newborn photos taken of DS, our photog hooked up my camera and put the same settings that she uses on it.  I was able to take lots and lots of great pictures.  Fast forward six months and my settings have changed along the way .  Now my pics look like this:

I get that he's moving and that will create blur, so I'm more concerned with the blurriness around his head/face- can I modify my settings to fix it?

Re: DSLR gals

  • Try increasing the aperture. Set your camera to the highest aperture (likely f/22) and see if that helps.

  • If the photographer changed your settings, she changed them to what she was using per the lighting that day.  Those settings will not all be appropriate.  You need to speed your shutter speed way up and keep your aperture as low a possible.  If you do that and they are too dark, bump up your ISO.

Actually she wants to lower her aperture (4.0 or lower if possible) to let in more light so she can speed up her shutter.

This. Also, I always always always use my speedlite. The lighting in my house blows.

Thanks to you both!  I'll give it a shot.

  • Also if you don't have a good flash that you can bounce around, just turn your ISO way up...it will give you some noise, but no harsh shadows from a direct flash.  You can always remove noise in post-production pretty easily.
