Pregnant after IF

Shaving

The 32 Weeks email from my hospital that I received today said:

"If you are in the habit of shaving your pubic hair, or near it, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, recommends that you stop at this point until after your baby is born. Shaving and other hair removal techniques can occasionally traumatize the skin and lead to infections. If a cesarean section is required, or any other procedure that might require hair removal, the removal should be done at that time according to the hospital?s policies and procedures."

What do you ladies think? Before the email I was planning on waxing or shaving near my due date so it will be easier during the healing process after the delivery.

  • Wow - I had never heard of that before!  I was also planning on getting waxed before my due date but maybe I should rethink my plan!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Totally do not agree.  Just got back from my final waxing appointment.  For my DD, I was waxed and they still took a razor to me a little in the OR before my csection.  And when I say razor that's it.  No soap, lotion, gel.  This time I got more removed (not a brazilian girl here) and I am happy.  I would rather have the control over that area and also I find the lochia after delivery must easier to deal with if there is less hair.

  • Interesting, I had never heard of that.  I wonder what they'd say for twins (since you go sooner and are more likely to have a CS).  I'm not sure doing this before will make anything easier for you after delivery, as it grows back fairly quickly.  I might wait and if you need a CS, they'll shave you, if you don't, you can take care of it afterwards.

  • Never heard of that! I plan on getting waxed. And my waxing lady told me that she had a lady come in as she was on the way to the hospital on her delivery day just to get waxed before!

  • I have never heard of that! At my hospital prenatal class they actually said to shave for as long as you can as you won't be able to afterwards for a little while. My mom also told me that her doctor used to shave them before giving birth -- while they were in labor! I guess he thought hair was gross?

Either way, I'm going to just keep on shaving.

  • ummm....what about the trauma associated with it growing and itching.  I don't think I could handle not shaving.  If I don't shave for more than 5 days I'm freaking out scratching my crotch.  However, I did notice this morning it was more difficult to see what I was doing down there.  I guess I'll call my hubby in for some assistance when I can't do it on my own anymore.

  • I waxed the day before my c-section and when the nurse came in to shave me I said I waxed and she said good thinking.  They weren't the least bit bothered by the fact that I had waxed.  I don't think I could have gone 8 weeks without shaving or waxing.

  • lurker here ...  I have heard that shaving close to being in the hospital increases the risk of catching infections such as staph that can be found in hospitals because of the possibility of opening small nicks/wounds in the skin.   That said, I'm not sure if it's true, or "how soon" they were talking about!
