I've seen it spelled four ways on name lists. I would prefer to go with the traditional spelling if we have a girl.
If I had to choose, I prefer Anne____ because I feel like it's less likely to get shorted to Anna (nn) in writing and hopefully speech.

Re: What is the traditional spelling of this name?
Hmmm. Maybe I should rephrase my question - If I told you that was my name, how would you spell it?
Or do you think it will have to be spelled out no matter which variation we choose?

No matter how you spell it, chances are at one point in your child's life she will be called Anna, it is just how people are. Unless you are consistent in insisting it is just Anne or Anneliese anyway.
(oh and I would spell it how I did above)

Very true...for some reason I always gravitate towards names that are easily shortened even though it's not my intent - I guess I like to torture myself.
My best friend keeps telling me that Christian WILL be Chris. So far so good. I'm kind of surprised no one has even tried in his 2 short years.

We named our daughter Anneliese, the traditional German/Dutch spelling. I also like that it doesn't have 'anal' (or 'annal') in it.
ETA: She's almost always called Annie. Also, we always have to tell people how to spell her full name- but most people don't know what the traditional/common spelling is.
