If so...how's that working out for you? ![]()
I've had it with filling up my 4Runner - $75 a tank?? No thanks!!!
Though it's going to take convincing for DH to trade it in any time soon. IMO, it's better to rid ourselves of the extra $200 a month in gas and put a little money into something smaller/more efficient.
We got the 4Runner to accommodate all the twin gear when we go anywhere. Truth is, when we went to the beach this summer, we didn't even take the stroller (which is the main space taker-upper). So when we go anywhere in the future the odds of us needing the stroller AND both PnPs (as we are also beginning to climb out of our cribs) is pretty slim.
I'd love any feedback on a Prius or anything in the same category of size/efficiency. I do love Toyotas though...I've had a Camry and the 4Runner and have been very happy with both. A hatchback type of rear is preferable.
Re: Any MoMs drive a Prius? (EDIT: or anything fairly efficient?)
I drove a Pontiac Vibe. I want to say that's the same size/platform. I'd get 32mpg on the highway (at least 25+ in the city). Their infant seats and (now) convertible seats fit perfectly in the back seat. I did have to move my seat up a little closer to the steering wheel but it was fine with me. We have a Duoglider and it fit well in the back hatch area.
I say I "drove" it because DH and I have now switched cars. He drove an Outlook and with the gas prices and his commute it was more economic for him to drive the Vibe since we only do little errands around town. But I totally hear you on the $75 a tank fill up. Oiy. GL!
ETA: Even though our Vibe is a Pontiac, the engine itself is Toyota (not sure if that makes a difference). The Toyota Matrix is the same as the Vibe, although I don't know if they make those anymore.
Minivan? It's fairly energy efficient and for all that room!
I'm actually shocked that I'm not spending any more on gas now days than when I had a Nissan Maxima.

We have a Jetta Wagon TDI......which would have more room than the Prius and similar fuel economy. We're getting 42mpg on ours - including city driving. It is diesel - which I know is unpopular to most - but I'm very biased toward diesels (I actually work with diesels in my job). IMO - with the jetta - you don't sacrafice power, space or fuel economy. It drives like a sports car if you want it to, we can fit both car seats in it and since its the wagon version - strollers, etc fit great in the back. The back hatch actually fits as much as my Jeep Cherokee does.
So, we get over 500 miles on a tank and even with current fuel prices, its only about $40 to fuel it up.
While I don't have the twins yet, I drive a Prius and the trunk is very spacious. I don't think we'll have a problem fitting stuff into there. However, the Prius is a very expensive car compared to other cheaper fuel efficient cars that you can get now. I got mine 4 years ago when the Prius was the main fuel efficient car out there and I was driving a ton. Now I barely put any miles on my car (I live 1.5 miles from my job), so I'm not saving much, especially compared to what my car payments are.
I find that when I'm driving locally I get around 35-38mpg. If I'm driving longer distances I get around 40-44mpg. That is the complete opposite of what I was told when I was researching the car (hybrids are supposed to be better in city driving rather then highway driving). How hilly the places where you drive are will determine how your gas mileage will be. The more you go up hills, the worse mileage you'll get.
Overall I love my car and plan on keeping it for a long time, but unless you're putting a lot of miles on it, it's not worth the cost (IMO). I will say that I have barely had to put any money into it over the past four years (I just replaced the tires this year). If you have any other questions about the Prius specifically just let me know.
My twins aren't here yet, but my husband and I own and drive a Prius and a Honda Civic. They're both compact-ish, but we're going to try our best to stick with them until we can't stick with them anymore. (For one thing, we don't have car payments on either one!)
If we absolutely have to upsize, we're hoping to stick to a crossover like a Subaru Outback.
