My first daycare vent...ahhh

I have been having supply issues with BF as it is, but that stuff is like liquid gold even if I didn't.  I sent a 7 oz bottle of milk to daycare this morning and wrote out instructions about how long to leave it out, etc.  The daycare provider told me that he drank 1.5 oz out of the bottle and she dumped the rest down the drain!!!!  Seriously!!!?!??  It took me 20 minutes of pumping to get that!

  • Daycares around here will make a bottle, attempt to feed for no more than one hour and whatever is left gets dumped. It doesn't matter what the parents say. State health department wins every time.

Ask them to start with 2 oz and get more out if your son needs it instead making all 7 oz at once. Make individual storage bags/bottles with only 2 oz in them. That way they can easily take out two ounces and add to it if he downs it and needs more. It might cost extra in storage containers (unless you get one large container they can pour from as needed), but if you're worried about supply and waste, it's a small price to pay.

  • I used to work as a preschool teacher, now a SAHM, but yes we have to follow the health department or the school will be fined or shut down. I know its hard on some parents but teachers have to follow the laws in their state.
  • My lactation consultant suggested making up mini-bottles so this doesn't happen.  I am the crazy that sends 8 bottles to daycare so I don't lose any BM.  I send 2, 3 and 4 oz bottles so they can judge how hungry he is and only use what is necessary.

  • Agreed with pp- send smaller bottles.  I've worked in a few daycares and they all have to follow the 1 hr rule, per state regulations.  I know exactly how precious it is, so I think making the smaller bottles would help with it getting wasted!
