Trigger tips?

Tomorrow evening I will have my trigger shot for my ER on Monday (it was changed from Sunday). I've heard it burns like hell and helps to take it out of the fridge a bit in advance.

Any other tips? Is it better to do it fast or slow? Did you have any other side effects?

I know I've done shots for a good week and a half, sometimes two a day, but I'm already mentally psyching myself out. I know it's not as if I have an option or the past days would have been worthless, but these vials and knowing it's painful aren't helping.

Re: Trigger tips?

  • I haven't done IVF, but I've done the 10,000 IU HCG as an IUI trigger, and my RE's office warned me that it would sting and bruise/leave a welt.  I was so afraid to do it.  But I had NO problems with it.  Mine was room temp.  Good luck!

  • Like the PP, I had no reaction to it- but I'd think taking it out of the fridge half an hour in advance would be useful. :)

  • I've only used Ovidrel -- not sure if it's the same trigger that you're doing. Ditto PP suggestion of taking it out of the fridge for 30 minutes. I give myself the injections, so I tend to go pretty slow. I can't say that I've ever really felt the Ovidrel past the initial needle prick of it going in. GL at your ER!!

I love Ovidrel -- is it the only sub-Q trigger?  The needle is so little, and the shot never burns.  I hold the (capped) syringe in my armpit to warm it up for a few minutes.  Smile  And I use an ice cube for a couple minutes while I warm the syringe.  Just make sure you wipe with alcohol afterward, and then give that a minute to dry.

I've used Ovidrel for both of my IVF cycles and it was easy breezy.  Way better than Menopur.  I've only used a 10,000 HCG trigger once and it wasn't bad either.  It is a little more painful because it was IM, but I didn't have any burning.

I would definitely let the medication get close to room temperature and wait and let the area that you swab with alcohol completely dry before injection.  I never found icing helped with any shots, but if you have found that, it wouldn't hurt to ice before swabbing with alcohol.

    Good luck!

  • You can store ovidrel at room temperature for up to 30 days.  I always take mine out a day or two before I know I'm going to need it, that way it's never cold.  This shot for me was simple, and is the only shot I have given myself besides the follistim pen.  I found it quite painless and didn't prep at all except with an alcohol swab (which needs to dry!).  Good Luck!

  • Thank you all so so much for the support and tips. I'm taking something called predalon. I don't know if it's just what ovidrel is called here, but I assume it's similar since they are both hCG. I have 2 vials to mix with the sterile water.

They told me to take it in the stomach, so it is a subcutaneous. Never will I complain about having a little extra tummy flab, because I can't imagine doing this without it!
