Parenting after 35

I feel violated....

My mouse issue just took a nasty turn.  This morning hubby saw one run across the kitchen floor and go either under the fridge or into the pantry.

Cleaned out the misc. stuff in the bottom of the pantry.. no mouse.  I ain't moving the fridge.   That little bugger better have found his way back to the basement where my cat will get him.

I have a freakin' new house.. only about 4 years old!!!!!  But we live out in the country and there's a huge field behind the house.   Plus, it's super dry, so there's probably not much to eat.  How these things keep getting in.. I have no idea.   I know my neighbors get them too.

Off to Walmart to buy a live trap.   Mouse.. your days are numbered.

  • Ugh, good luck! Mice skeeve me (shudders) to no end. Every winter my parents' house would get them.

My biggest fear is one running over my bare feet. I have no idea why this freaks me out so much.

  • GL! I only have one question: what are you going to do with it when it gets in the trap?

  • You need to let that cat out of the basement.  Mine play with mice until they die/are broken.

Good luck on the mouse issue.  They are such a PITA.

  • Not a fan of mice.  Boo! Hope your traps work!

We have termites. Gah! I found them (swarmers) and the property was treated yesterday. So icky.

  • Mice need next to no space to get in.  Go outside and take a walk around your house, check for any spaces between any pipes/wires going into the house and the wall/brick/siding/foundation, fill all these little openings will spray foam insulation or steel wool.  Keep in mind the opening can be tiny.  I had a hamster as a kid that could turn around in a toilet paper tube, so a mouse would need a much smaller opening to get in.  Also, check your dryer vent to ensure the outside cover is not broken and is working properly (ie. the slats are lying flat when the dryer is not running, so no little critters can climb in).  Good luck ridding your house of those pesky critters.

  • Oh.. we've looked all over the outside of the house and can't find anything... I know mice can squeeze into the hole the size of a dime, but still nothing apparent.

My friend suggested an electronic device that emits a high pitched noise that will repel the mice.  I think I'm going to get one of those, too, since this is a never ending problem.. no matter what time of year.

Oh.. and our cat roams the house and bring them (dead and alive!) to my bedroom.  She just hasn't found this one and he got to the second floor.. .so now it's time for ME to act.

    Mice skeeve me out, too.

  • Kitty!  Time to get on the case!

I don't really mind mice.  Not saying I'd want them in my house or invite them over for cocktails, but I don't have a heart attack when I see one.  I lived in NYC for many years where roaches were far more commonplace.  Now that's something that makes me run for the hills.

  • Ugh, I had a problem with mice years ago. They were entering thru a small space between the wall and the exhaust tubing behind the stove. I hate to say it but, if you see one, there are likely many more. PP gave good advice on the spray insulation foam. That stuff expands and fills the space. Just have to find their entry way.

  • Ick. Hopefully you foil their diabolical plans soon. I grew up in the country and we had the same problem every fall when the temps fell. We had a huge silent, mouser of a cat named Shadrack. He never "said" a word until he killed a mouse then he mewed at the top of his lungs until my mom came out and petted and praised him and took his prize. We knew he was tracking a mouse when he started sitting on the end of the counter with his front paws hanging off. Eventually we would hear this loud, "THUMP"  in the middle of the night and the mewing ensued. No more mouse. For a while.
