anyone here break their tailbone during delivery?

I was one of the unlucky few who delivered a 9lbr who was posterior and broke my tailbone on his way out.  Anyway, that was 20 months ago and I still have tailbone pain.  I've been for x-rays and an MRI.  Both show the break has healed, but at an angle and according to the docs, it's not at an acute enough angle to correct/remove surgically.  I was on anti- inflammatories (can't take when TTC) and went for massage for 6 months (can't afford to do this forever).  I've just been putting up with it, but it's becoming a bigger problem lately.   Anyone have any suggestions as to how to deal with the pain?  Also if this has happened to anyone and you did have another LO would your doc do a scheduled C/S to avoid the chance of reinjuring the tb the second time around?

Ouch! No advice, just mad props for going through that and being willing to endure it again.

No, but I knew someone who did and she had a c/s the next time.  But then again hers healed okay I think.

  • So sorry to hear this!  I did not break my tailbone during delivery, but I did develop Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction during my pregnancy and dislocated my pelvis. I was in physical therapy throughout my 3rd trimester and in extreme pain.  I pushed for almost 4 hours and I finally had a c cection because Charlie was stuck and I could not push him out.  After he was delivered, he weighed 9 lbs 2 oz and the doc told me that he was in the "sunny side up" position as well.  The back of his head was stuck on the back of my pelvis.  OUCH!  I also dealt with some post traumatic stress after Charlie was born because of my birth experience.

I would definitely suggest discussing your options with your doctor.  Have you tried physical therapy?  I was "lucky" and my pelvis problems resolved themselves after Charlie was born. I am not planning on having another (partially because I had a difficult pregnancy and birth) so I can't really say what I would do next time.

I did, but it healed fairly quickly considering... I could not bend over or sit properly for about a month, but then it slowly got better without any extra assistance.  I did have the issue again after my 2nd was born too but it healed up so much faster!  After my third (surprisingly) no pain at all - well except that I had pain at the epidural site for quite a while.. ugh.  All vaginal births.  Sorry no advice since I did not seek help.
