what to do with expired carseat?

Our infant seat expired this year, it's in perfect condition and throwing it in the garbage feels wrong.  Do shelters take them?  I've seen people using very old seats and it seems like mine would be a step up at least?

  • I can't imagine they would take an expired seat.  It's not safe anymore.  I would just throw it away.

  • As much as you'd like to donate it and help someone else, they probably won't take an expired seat. Even though it looks perfect, the plastic has degraded and isn't safe to use anymore. Cut the straps, take a sledgehammer to the seat and toss it in the trash.

  • I would contact your local BRU to see if they know of any carseat recycling programs. Some places have annual carseat recycling drives where they will break down the materials and recycle them appropriately instead of filling a landfill with expired seats.

  • If it is an expired seat, then it is an expired seat. Just because you think it is in perfect condition, it may in fact not be. Do you want to live the rest of your life wondering if your seat that appeared to be "in perfect condition" in fact failed in a crash? Just destroy it or recycle it, please.
