How long between MEPS to basic?

My DH is enlisting in the Air Force and he leaves for MEPS on Tuesday, I know it depends on his job for when he leaves for basic but I was wondering how long it took your DH or yourself between MEPS to leave for basic? TIA!

Re: How long between MEPS to basic?

  • It really depends on space available, job opening, and Delayed Entry Program. My husband waited almost 7 months to get a slot. My sister left in a week. You will get these varied answers from everyone on the board.

  • I agree with what PP said it depends on the job and when they have opening. For my DH he went in the end of July and was not supposed to go to basic till Jan but got a call in Oct that they had a spot for to go in Nov so he left then instead. So they can also give you a date and then offer you sooner also.

  • It varies. For my DH, it was only about a month. Not sure about the Air Force, but I do know that the Army has filled its quota for this year and new recruits are having to wait until 2012 to begin basic.

  • DH waited about 8 months, and his job is considered critically undermanned. GL.

  • DH went to MEPS sometime in the summer and left for BMT in Sept. So maybe 3 months? He knew what field he was getting into before he even left for BMT and it's a critically manned field...it's why he picked, he knew he would leave quicker.  But he's also got some friends in the same field who waited a lot longer than he did.  I know a wife whose DH was told it would be a long time before he left, like at least 9 months and then they called him out the blue after about a month and told him he was leaving the next day. You never know with them.

My husband went in a career field that is critically undermaned nd he took 7 months to get a spot. Then at tech school it took two months to even start school then there were breaks in between his blocks. Undermanned could also mean the service has people flooding in to train in that career field and could mean a slower entry.

  • This was over 6 years ago but I think it was about a month, maybe not even a full month.  Things went very quick for him.  That was also during a time when they were trying to get tons of people, that isn't really the case right now.  One of my friends' husband is currently at Tech school for the Air Force and it took him a really long time to head out to basic.  I think it was at least 6 months.
  • Less than 2 months and he went straight to Tech school afterwords, no time in between or break at all. That was over 8 years ago.
