TB vaccine...

Hey ladies, I am waiting on a call back from my midwife, but thought I would ask here too....I am starting a new job at a healthcare center today and I have to get a TB vaccine....anyone know if this is safe to do so while pregnant? Thanks

Re: TB vaccine...

  • The BCG vaccine is a live vaccine so no it would not be appropriate in pregnancy.

  • I work in healthcare and was told by my OB that a TB test was perfectly safe.

  • Is it a TB vaccine, or TB test? You said vaccine, but I am guessing you meant test. The test is safe, the vaccine, being a live virus is not.

I work in healthcare and have has two TB tests since have become pregnant.

  • Agree with pp, I work in healthcare and had a TB test with my son and one with this pregnancy too.  It is safe.

  • Just got a call from my MW, she says no go. No vaccine while pregnant. Test is ok though.....really hope there is some way around this for my job, I really need to start working and didnt want to tell them I am pregnant before I even start. Just went through a drug test, level 2 backround check and digital fingerprinting- passed it all and now this....thought I would actually be able to start working before I had to tell anyone....havent worked since the 2nd week in may- and that job is where I was when I found out so they knew....please pray for me, I need to start working as we have many needs to take care of before the end of December!
  • Just out if curiosity where do you live?
  • are you talking about a TB test or vaccine, the two are very different.  To my knowledge the TB vaccine is not given in the US.
  • LoL- I stated in my post I am talking about the vaccine. I know the difference between the vaccine and the test. My potential employer said "shot". Of course I will verify when I go in to talk to them as to whether it is a test or a vaccine. I live in Florida.
  • Yeah, as PP said, there is no TB vaccine in the US.

A TB test is usually a PPD skin test, and that is safe. It is not uncommon for employers to require that. But not the vaccine.

  • Well I would be working with a lot of elderly people so I am not sure if thats why they give it. Again, I will be double checking to see when I go in, in an hour. Hopefully it is just the test and not the vaccine...
  • It was just the skin test....don't know why he kept saying shot and what not...all good though, passed and got the job! Yay
  • It IS safe during pregnancy. I work in a hospital and have to get it once a year. This year I wanted to refuse it because I was worried it would harm my LO. I asked a couple OBs and Nurses and they all said it will the effect the baby.
