How many calories for BFing?

I am watching what I eat somewhat and walking but the weight is not budging with this 2nd one. I lost all my pg weight pretty easy with #1 but it is really hard this time. I think i need to start counting calories. What is the minimum u are supposed to eat without killing your milk supply?

  • Depends on your weight and fitness lever. I've heard 1800 tossed around a lot but I'm a small person and only lose weight if I get below that, so it's hard to say.
  • I've been losing about two pounds a week on 1800-2000 a day plus a bit of exercise.  I've seen a noticeable drop in milk supply when I go below 1600 or so.
  • I imagine this varies by person. For me, the factor that seems to impact my supply the most is the amount of sleep/fluids I get. Then again, I haven't really tried cutting calories. My best weight days are those that I try to eat like I did before I was pregnant or pumping BM (just a small breakfast, small lunch, healthy snacks, and a normal dinner). I find that most days when I'm not focused on keeping the meals like that, I feel hungry all the time and it keeps me about 2lbs above my goal weight, which I guess I can live with for now. BM burns 20 cals/ounce. Do you have any idea how many ounces LO eats each day? That might make a difference in figuring out what you need. I pump 40 ounces/day so I know that's about 800 cals.
