basal body thermometer?

I checked at Target and I didn't see any at all. Next stop will be CVS I guess. Any particular brands to look for? I've never actually bought a thermometer before. I have one of those old mercury ones that my mom gave me when I went college. Got some OPKs but figured I should start charting too. I've been avoiding it. Seems like math.

Re: basal body thermometer?

  • I bought two thermometers from walgreens, one for my travel case and one for my nightstand. The bbt thermometers are usually by the family planning section of the store. Charting is actually very little work and can provide tremendous information for your dr.

  • It's not at all like math. It quite addictive too. I would suggest a BBT that stores at least one temp though so you don't have to worry about writing it down or entering it right away. I think they are either located by the other thermometers or by the condoms and tests.

  • Some things to look for: like pp said, one that stores at least one temp is a must in my opinion, also check how many decimals it goes to (this may not apply, I chart in metric, so I need mine to go to at least two decimal points), also a backlight is helpful (I use the light from my iphone to see the numbers in the morning). I have the one from Target, but I don't like it very much. Sometimes it gives me wacky temps. I think it may be on crack.

  • My Target has a couple of different ones. Maybe you were looking in the wrong spot?  I would ask at the pharmacy and they can point you to the correct aisle. I have a Target one, so I can't comment on other brands. Most drugstores should have them.

  • I got the cvs brand. It's pretty, purple, it works. I may stop temping for a bit though just to relieve some pressure unless we hear d day rumors..

  • Looked again at Food Lion. I guess I will have to make a special trip to the store! Just started OPK so maybe next cycle I will start charting. I really don't want to though. Seems like a hassle. But I'm trying to be more pro-active.

I know what you mean about it being a hassle.  I worry about getting correct temps because my sleeping pattern isn't very good.  Plus my husband's alarm goes off at 5 am whereas I don't need to be up until 7 am.  I'm guessing it'd be wise to just temp at that hour.  I'll start charting next cycle if I don't get a BFP this time.  I'm at my wits end after having tried for over a year and a half almost.
