If you have someone who comes to your house to watch your kids

what do you think is a fair amount to pay them?

We have a friend who comes to our house to watch our 2 kids, ages 3 and 6 months. She has been watching them for us since I went back to work, 8 weeks after having #2. I'd been unemployed for 2 years when my position was cut due to budget cuts, and we've been paying her basically what I was paying for an in-home daycare for 1 child. She offered to take that amount for 2 reasons: 1.) because we were really strapped for cash since I had been unemployed for so long, and 2.) because she was also unemployed.

As we get back on our feet and dig out of the hole we were in, I'm wondering what a fair amount would be to pay. Any suggestions?

Re: If you have someone who comes to your house to watch your kids

  • I watch a friends child in their house 3 days a week and get $45 a day.  If they had another baby I would raise it a little, but not too much.  Maybe $60/day.

  • If she comes to your house, and your child is the only one she watches, then $10 an hour is fair. Since you are her only income. Remember that minimum wage is $7 something. If she can watch other children at her house, then $30-40 per day is fair because she has other income (other kids). Make sense?
