3rd Trimester

Anyone Anemic?

I just heard back from my doc's office that I don't have GD (yea!) but I am anemic.  She sent me to the drug store for Slow Fe (iron supplement) and told me to take 2 a day in addition to my pnv.  That's nearly 100mg of iron in just the supplement and like 500% of the recommend daily intake.

Just curious to know if anyone else is supplementing with iron due to anemia and if this sounds like what you're taking?

Thanks!

  • ME!  I've been on Repliva for a month now, along w/ my PNVs.

Plus I have a list of foods that are iron rich that we're trying to incorporate into our meals!

  • I've been having a lot of lightheaded/dizzy spells and my dr told me to take over the counter iron in addition to my pnv.  She said it might make me nauseous so to take it before I went to bed.  After I heard that I just decided I'd live with being lightheaded.  My dr told me I could take flinstones instead of pnv until my morning sickness was over.  I tried taking the real pnv twice in my 2nd tri and both times after taking them I puked for 3 days straight.  I didn't want to deal w/ that again with the iron.
  • Yup, that sounds about right.

I also found out I was anemic durign the GD test, started taking 120 grams a day and it's making a world of difference in how I feel.  I thought I was just weak and tired because the 2nd tri was over, but it was anemia.  Iron pills have worked wonders, but don't take them on an empty stomach (I got really sick to my stomach a couple of times before I realized I needed to ignore the 'take on empty stomach' directions).

  • my iron was right on the cut off so my midwife recommended alfalfa supplements believe it or not. she says its fine since i am technically "passing" and that it wouldnt cause the side effects, such as constipation. I dunno how much good it does if you are actually low iron though.

  • I've been on iron since my 1st appointment at 10 weeks - the same kind but only one pill.

After my GD test they said I was borderline low and told me to take iron (the nurse that called me must not have looked at my chart) but I already was so we didn't do anything about it.

I am so exhausted lately though that I am thinking about asking my doctor if she thinks I need to take more, if thats the problem.

  • Thanks everyone!  I'm planning to take them for the first time tonight in case they make me feel lousy.  It would be fantastic if I started to feel less exhausted as well -- I've been so worn out every day.
  • Yup me.  But I only have to take one slow FE opposite from my PNV....I'm only slightly anemic.

Doc said because of delivery blood loss it is really important to have iron levels up when you deliver....

  • I'm on iron pills also.  I had the gastric bypass surgery five years ago this upcoming Jan.  I was on an iron pill prior to getting pg, however I have always had low iron. (My mother has low iron also; I hear it's a woman thing) I'm on 2 pills a day.  I would recommend you keep a fiber supplement around until your body gets use to it.  It can cause things to get "backed up".  It's not a good thing for pg women to get backed up either.....hemorrhoids tend to be a side effect of it.

  • I just wanted to say how important it is to take the iron.  I didn't last time and almost ended up with a blood transfusion after delivery.  Plus the iron makes you feel so much better during the day.  It really helps with the fatigue.
