Runners who ran throughout pregnancy..

I am 36 weeks and still running about 3 miles 6 days a week pushing my little guy in the stroller. I am just starting to feel exhausted after my runs and wondering how many kept it up throughout their entire pregnancy and how you felt towards the end!!! Also, did you wait the 6 weeks after birth to start up again.

  • I ran with pg #2 till 4 days before I delivered.  This pg I was hoping to keep it up but the round ligament pain is so bad that I'm limping for days after a run so unfortunately I've had to hang up my running shoes.  :(  With all of my pregnancies I've started working out/running 3-4 weeks post partum and ran a 1/2 marathon 13 weeks after my 2nd child was born.  During the first 3 weeks I'd do a lot of walking around the neighborhood.  It's definitely something you can do, just go by how your body feels.

I ran until 37 weeks when I got sciatica and it was too painful to continue.  If it weren't for that, I would have kept going until I delivered.  I started running again about 4.5 weeks after delivery.

  • I ran until 31 weeks, and had my son 6 weeks early at 34 weeks.  I stopped running at 31 weeks because my body could barely get off the couch after a 5K run/walk so I decided no more running for me.  LIttle did I know that I was probably at the beginning stages of pre-term labor.

I didn't start running right away mostly because I was dealing with a preemie, but I did do my first 5K, about 6 weeks pp.

  • I ran daily until I delivered at exactly 40 weeks. I felt fine but of course was a lot slower than pre-pregnancy and didn't go for really long runs. I ran 6 miles the night before I went into labor. I am still running 8 miles daily now.

I started running again 1 week after my easy, fast vaginal delivery. I took it easy in the beginning and it was fine. I was able to run a full marathon 2 months after giving birth.

  • I ran while preg with my first child. I actually ran 4 miles (slowly) the day before I delivered. After a while, the pressure of carrying low made it hard to run. I felt great during delivery and credit that to staying in shape during pregnancy. I started jogging again a month after delivery. I didn't tear or have any cuts so the doc ok'ed it.
  • You guys are inspirational!  I'm a budding runner (mostly get my exercise on the soccer field) and don't want my pg to deter me from getting out there and running.
