Anyone on iron supplements?

At my monthly appt yesterday, my OB informed me that I am slightly anemic and suggested I take a daily iron pill. I went to CVS and there are a few different options w/ different mg levels - 27mg, 56mg, and another that was even more than that.
Do you know what you take? Also, do they make you constipated?  I may call my OB with these questions too.

Re: Anyone on iron supplements?

  • Im not sure how many miligrams I take. I can check when I get home. They made me constipated at first... but don't really anymore... I think my body got used to them. I took a stool softener for awhile to help move things along.

  • I'm on a supplement, same story as you, slightly anemic, but the doc gave me an Rx. I forget the name, but will look at it when I get home.

This pregnancy has made me constipated, for the most part, but no real difference on the pills.

  • I take Slow Fe iron supplements, they are supposed to be better for your stomach and reduce constipation issues because they are a slow release pill.
  • I take Spring Valley Iron 65mg. I talked to the pharmacist while I was shopping for them and he said these were best because even though this is 361% of the daily value, people don't absorb all of the iron that they consume.

  • (lurking from December)

I'm more than slightly anemic (have been anemic for a very long time), and I'm supposed to be taking 350mg! I only just realized the amount at my last appointment as I've been taking about 50mg per day until then. Anyway call the dr and ask - you don't want to take too much.

Oh, and I've had no constipation issues while taking it.

I take the target/up and up version of slow FE.  It has never made me constipated, even at the end of my last pg where I was so anemic I had to take 2 supplements a day.  So far, I'm only taking 1 pill a day for this one!

  • I take Slow Fe as well.  I've never had an issue with it.

  • My doctor said to take any supplement with at least 60mg elemental iron. It's good to take it with citrus juices about 30 minutes before you eat. Hopefully it will make you feel better!
  • I take Floradix.  Around here, you can only get it at 'natural' food/drug places.

It is a plant-based iron and (according to my midwife) much easier for the body to absorb than other irons.  They had me taking the Slow FE last time, and recommended Floradix over the SFE this time.

After delivering my daughter, the iron count in my blood was 6 (which is low for those that don't know) so I am hoping taking the Floradix will help keep it up some this time around.

  • wow, thanks, ladies. everyone is so different. I am leaning toward the slowFE. I hope it won't give my constipation. Thanks, again.
