I'm BFing, but just starting to pump so that DD can have one bottle a day. To warm the bottles, I've been heating up a big cup of water in the microwave, then letting the bottle sit in it until it feels warm when I squirt a little on my wrist.
The problem is, this seems to take a long time and waste a lot of water. Is there a quicker way to heat the bottle safely without spending $$ on a warmer? Should I just bite the bullet and get a bottle warmer?
If you have a bottle warmer, how long does it take to heat the bottle?
Thanks
Re: How do you warm bottles?
This. Try it cold. It makes your life a whole lot easier if LO will take it that way.
you should never warm it in the microwave or use really hot water to warm it --
the best way to warm it is by letting it sit in a container with warm water for a few mins - you may have to change the water once or twice but that is the best way to warm it. and your baby might be ok with the milk if it isn't super warm...just try it.
Read the materials that come with your pump...they give tips.
you must remember NOT to warm your milk in the microwave. There are a number of reasons not to do this, but to state a couple:
- the microwave warms very erratically and
there may be various areas in the milk that will heat up more than
others, which may lead to burning your baby?s mouth;
- some of the nutrients in the breast milk may
be destroyed as you microwave, and guess what, all that hard work that
you just did went down the drain.
You can use the microwave to heat up water. We kept a specific microwave-safe cup by the sink, filled it up with water and put it into the microwave for 2 minutes. Take the bottle from the refrigerator and hold on to the top of the bottle, spinning it slightly in the cup of hot water. In about 1 minute the bottle is nice and warm, within a total of 3 minutes. The slight spinning of the bottle in the cup of water thoroughly heats the milk throughout the bottle, without having to shake it, causing those horrible gas-producing bottles. The water can also be heated on the stove, but it takes a bit longer to heat the water and you must monitor the water to make sure that it does not get too hot.
Also, bottle warmers are a good choice, however, most take between 5-10 minutes for the heating element to heat up.
my biggest tip is to start warming it before he needs to eat. If I wait until he's crying, he gets a cool bottle! I just warm it in a big mug of tap water in the sink. I leave it in there anywhere between 2 mins (or however long a diaper change takes) to a half hour or so... Luckily he will take it at any temp (especially now that it's summer) but he seems to prefer it warm, especially when he's sleepy.
Totally agree. I gave up warming bottles after just a couple weeks.
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
all this exactly.
i exclusively pump and give bottled BM to the baby. obv, i keep the milk in the fridge once it is pumped. i have also given the baby formula on occasion (also cold or room temp). i always serve it right out of the fridge. i didn't even know that people warmed bottles anymore. what a pain - what happens when you go out? you can't always warm it...right?
anyways, my baby is used to really cold, room temp and about once a day, i nurse him (so he drinks it warm too).
stop fussing with the warming, unless of course, your baby refuses it any other way (and then i guess you have to).
this is what I do too
