excercise tips while pregnant?

Hi!  I'm about 19weeks and know I should be excercising, but was wondering if any of you had some good tips.  I wasn't in the best shape before pregnancy, and then I had terrible morning sickness in the first trimester.  I have heard walking is safe, but it is so hot outside (and I tend to look for excuses when it's hot).  I might try some of the Oh Baby Fitness classes, once I get my doctor to sign the release next week.

Any one else have any luck with those classes or have any general exercise tips for the summer?

 Thanks!!

Re: excercise tips while pregnant?

  • I was pregnant for the majority of the time in the winter months, but we were in south FL where it was 90 in February! I did a prenatal yoga dvd a lot and also did yoga while I was in school for massage. DH & I walked every night around the river/beach with the dog or at least the mall if the weather was bad. Try going early in the morning or later at night once the sun starts to set. We normally take DS for a wagon ride around our section of the neighborhood around 7:30 and it's normally cooler by then. If I had been up here while I was pregnant, I would have loved to have done the Oh Baby classes.

  • Do you have access to a pool? If so, there are great exercises you can do and still cool at the same time. Even just walking from one end to the other.

  • I also recommend getting a prenatal yoga dvd (or going to a class) for when it's too hot to exercise outside.  I get up early in the morning to run before it gets too hot or we'll do walks in the evenings with our dogs and my son.  Exercises in the pool are supposed to be great while pregnant, too, but I basically just end up laying around in the pool staying cool.  :)

I don't know anything about the Oh Baby Fitness classes, though.

  • Thanks everyone for the advice!  I do have access to a pool, and a prenatal yoga dvd is also a great idea.  Definitely both things I could do and stay motivated at.

  • I've been doing prenatal pilates throughout my pregnancy and have loved it.  I got the 10 minute prenatal pilates solution dvd.  You don't need to know anything about pilates to do it, and the exercises aren't that strenuous.  GL!

  • I loved oh baby fitness.  I did pilates, combo, the pool class was my favorite.  Kathleen is my favorite teacher.  I cant say enough good things about them.

Water Aerobics are great for when you are pg. Also, when your feet swell up really bad, just getting in the pool and walking (not treading) will dramatically help. I did this in my 3rd trimester and it was awesome.

I took Oh Baby Fitness classes for a little bit with DS1 pg and I really really loved them. It was nice to meet other pg women and it was a good workout. I would have done more classes but I got put on bedrest.
