How often do you get Braxton Hicks?

I've been getting them a lot (several times a day) for the past several weeks. At first I just thought it was the baby pushing hard in one area, but I have since learned that is not the case. Is there any correlation with early labor? I have an OB appt tomorrow so I'll ask more then but figured I'd ask here too ;)

Re: How often do you get Braxton Hicks?

  • Since 16 weeks I have had them anywhere from 2- 20 times a day. With my DD I had them from 18 weeks on but I did go into labor with her at 27 weeks, this time though I'm still tightly closed!

  • It varies by the day.  But, my doc said 2-3 an hour can be normal, more than that I should drink lots of water and lay down.  If they are still happening he said it's time to come in.
  • I started feeling them right around the time the 3rd trimester hit, although I read that your uterus contracts throughout the pregnancy, you just might not feel it until it's bigger. Depending on how active I am and how much water I drink, I get about 5-15 per day, and I'm 33 weeks. They are always non-rhythmic.

If you have 6 or more in 1 hour, call your doctor. Also drink lots of water and put your feet up. This could be the start of preterm labor.

  • Mine also started about 16 weeks for this pregnancy, they started earlier with each pregnancy.  I have them everyday and how often depends on how much I do in the day.

Once they started with my other pregnancies I had them everyday also.  DD1 was born 1 day before her due date and DD2 was born 1 week before her due date. With DD2 I was 4cm and 80% at 35 weeks and stayed that way even with having BH daily until my OB stripped my membranes at my 39 week appt.  She was born about 6 hours later.

My OB said the same as the pps stated.

I was the same way. I was 5 cm and 80% effaced by 35 weeks and never progressed further, even with membranes beinr swept at 39 weeks. I have DD at 40 weeks and 4 days, and it took me 24 hours to dilate from 5cm to 10!

  • I've been having issues with them since 25 weeks. At 29 weeks they turned into "real" contractions, meaning they were changing my cervix. I'm now on magnesium gluconate and bed rest in an attempt to delay labor as ling as possible. BH contractions are not fun but most of the time they're harmless.

  • I have been having them since 20 weeks and my doctor said it doesn't matter how many you get in a day...what matters is how many you get in an hour.  She said if I have over 6 to call L&D.  I have hit 5 in an hour, but never more than that.
