Big bed and moving?? All at once..???

DS decided to climb out of his crib a few days ago, lock the bedroom door (didn't even know there was a lock on it) and put all of these nice, porceline things in the girls cribs. Scared the holy beejeebees out of me...we are living with my mom and I never ever ever thought that he would do that or climb out. He doesn't even climb during the day....ay ay ay!! Anyways, I am so scared and paranoid that he will do it again and I am afraid of him falling and hurting himself. So, we are talking tonight about moving into his big bed (a twin or full-can't remember what his transitions to). The only problem is that we are moving in a few weeks and I don't know if this will be too much transition at once. Pedi today said that it's a good idea to do the one transition instead of moving in, getting used to it, then changing it up again...What are you thoughts? Anyone had to move and put into a big bed all at once??

Thanks! :)

  • We moved 2 weeks ago.  I asked my pediatrician, and he said the opposite--keep the crib until he's transitioned in the new home.  My LO is pretty sensitive and we were moving out-of-state, so lots of changes.  I'm glad we did it this way.  But he also hasn't tried to get out of his crib yet.

  • We are moving in 2 weeks. DS is still in his crib and hasn't climbed out yet. I know moving is quite the transition to kids though so we are giving him a "Big Boy" Toy Story (his favorite!) Room at the new house to make it more enticing for him. Hopefully it'll make him excited to be in his new room and new bed. I have bought every last thing to really do up his room, ordered the mattress last night. I'm really hoping it goes well. My sister did the same for her DS at the same age when they moved and it was a super smooth transition. He was so excited about his Cars room and big boy bed he never showed any signs of a rough transition to a new house.

If you're super worried about him continuing to climb and get hurt until you move, what about taking the front panel of the crib off to make it a toddler bed just until you move? If it's a convertible crib it should be able to do that. Mine even came with the toddler railing to add.

  • We moved & did big-bed all at once.

    Worked fine.

Our reasoning was that it might be more difficult at first, but we'd be done with it sooner.
Meaning that instead of transitioning her to the new house, and dealing with that, and then transitioning her to the new bed and dealing with that, we'd just be done.

Honestly it went really smoothly. We had a couple of weeks that were rough, but no worse than what I heard from any other parents transitioning to a big bed. Easier than some.

One thing we did is to let her visit the house a lot (it's a renovation, so it was a while before we actually moved in). She even napped in her room in her PNP a couple of times. In fact, before we even bought the house she could show the realtor which was her room. Then we had it all set up, all the furniture, toys, etc. before we moved her in. That way the only new thing was the bed itself. All her old familiar things were still there, just in a different setting.

We have since gotten rid of some of her "baby" items, but we made sure they were there for comfort for the transition.

    Whatever you decide, GL!
