When did your LO start with a sippy?

DD refuses every sippy that we've offered her.  She's 9 1/2 months.  We've tried both formula and water in the sippy, and she'll refuse both, but take her bottle right away (with formula - she still doesn't like water).  Should I keep trying, or just put the sippy away for a little while?

Re: When did your LO start with a sippy?

  • DD didn't take the sippy until around 15 months or so. I think that most of the guidelines say to try to transition them around 12 months. So, my thought would be to put the sippy cups away and try again later. For us, we had to try a number of different sippy cups until we found one that would work for her. So, you may also want to try a few different types.

  • I started giving small amounts of water in a sippy at 6 months. Have you tried the Nuby sippy cups? They have soft spouts that are more like bottle nipples.

  • I started offering DS water in a sippy cup when we started offering him solids at six months. He could never quite get the hang of spout-style sippy cups, though, and I didn't really mind because I know that dentists and some speech therapists aren't fans of that style cup, anyway. I switched to straw cups at seven or eight months, and he would drink some water from one of those. I used the Nuby ones with two handles until he was a year old. I think they say they're for nine months and up, but I tried them after a few people here said they'd had luck with straw cups earlier. We switched to the Munchkin flip top cups at around a year.

  • DD had barely any interest in sippies before her first birthday, esp. since they always had water in them and she didn't want to bother drinking water.  We ended up keeping her on bottles until about 14.5 months (just because of the super slow transition we did to cow's milk) and she did fine switching 100% to sippies then.  I would just put them away for a while and try again later.  You have plenty of time to get her used to cups vs. bottles.

  • DD never had a sippy.  We started out with straw cups (Take and Toss ones) when she was sick and couldn't nurse around 6 months old.

  • I gave my son the Nuby straw cups at around 7 months.  For at least a month, and probably longer, he had no clue what to do.  Then, one day he just started drinking out of it and continued to use it every time it was offered.  So far I have only done water in his cups.

We didn't start sippies until recently...like 9.5-10 months.  Sprout started showing a real interest in drinking, so we'd give him sips from our cups.  Getting him his own cup was just the natural progression from that.  he does pretty good with the sippy (it's just a plain, cheap one...figured I'd start there before buying something fancier!) but in the hospital he was drinking the tiny amounts of BM I was pumping in between his feedings from those containers on the pump...like a cup.  However, he still uses bottles for formula.  Sippies are just at meal times w/ water.

I'd maybe wait until she's showing an interest?

  • For DD and DS we started drinking from cups at 5 months.  I didn't introduce sippies until DD wanted to carry them around with her.
  • we are an anti-sippy household and went straight to straw cups with both kids, try that

  • We started a sippy at 6 months with both kids.  DD prefers straw sippies b/c she can't figure out how to tip regular ones.  We offer it during meals.  I'd just keep putting it out with some water during meals, and perhaps try a straw sippy.
