Swelling...

Anyone have any tips on reducing swelling in your feet and ankles while pregnant?

I never had any swelling while pregnant with DD, but I was also never pregnant in the summer either. (She was born in the spring.) It may just be the heat, but I've noticed my ankles are slightly more swollen and a little achy.

Luckily my hands are still normal and I'm still wearing my wedding bands. Last time I never had to take my wedding rings off and I'm hoping I won't have to this time either, although I still have another 8 weeks to go!

So, any tips?

Re: Swelling...

  • My ankles swelled towards the end of my pregnancy...the only thing I know of is too keep them elevated.  I know that's no easy task with a toddler :)

I got a 24oz tervis tumbler that I refill at least three times a day during work, and then drink only water after I get home. I also only have one coke in the morning and then water the rest of the day. My feet and hands have been swelling since March, but I am just a sweller naturally.  I try to prop my feet up at work as much as I can. I have my CPU under my desk and use that instead of a chair.  You can also try a paper box or something just sitting around the office to prop your feet on. I find that if i stay as cool as possible and drink lots and lots of water my swelling is better. I always swell worse after work and on the weekends because I am on my feet.  Good luck getting to prop them up at home :) I try to use the couch cushions when I am watching TV to get my feet above my heart.

  • Wish I could help, but my ankles were ridiculously swollen by the time I got to the end of my pregnancy with Noah. Maybe it's a boy thing!

  • Late to the post here but I had crazy swelling so I thought I'd share all the tips I got.  I was told to stay away from sugar and salt (HA!), keep my feet elevated and drink lots of water.

The ony thing that actually worked (because there was no way I was staying away from salt AND sugar!) was working from home one day a week, sitting in our recliner and keeping my feet up all day.  My ankles went from HUGE to almost normal sized again.  Of course, after a day or two they were huge again.

It doesn't sound like you're swelling too bad if you can still wear your wedding rings so you might just want to cut back on the salt and sugar and drink more water.  Good luck!

  • I've heard that eating lots of watermelon helps!

I eat a TON of it, and at my last appointment my edema was only +1. I don't know if it would be higher if I didn't eat as much of it since it's been the only thing I've craved or been able to stomach regularly since the end of 1st tri. I may have just been lucky.
