How do I know if I have a plugged duct?

Yes, I've read kellymom.  But how did you know that you had one?

Diagnose me, por favor.  I have the following symptoms:

Very sore spot on my boob, hurts a little without touching it, hurts a lot to the touch

Generally achy, but I also have a cold or allergies so that might be why.

I am lactating out of that boob just fine.

There are no lumps or protrusions.

Re: How do I know if I have a plugged duct?

  • I would get a very painful hardish lump and my supply would drop until I could get it unclogged, usually only DD could help, not the pump.

  • Sounds like a plugged duct, but with feeling achy, could have progressed to mastisis.  The pump/nursing would get rid of one pretty quickly for me.  If it doesn't hurt too much, massage the area while pumping/nursing to help.

ETA: Mine always felt like a hard lump.

  • I got mastitis for the first time last week and never even noticed the plugged duct or boob symptoms until I got a fever of 102. Then I noticed side of one of my boobs was sore and felt hard/lumpy and was red. I felt achy one afternoon and then, bam, that night woke up with fever and chills. I hope it's not that for you, because it sucked! Luckily, the antibiotics worked fast.

  • Can you pinpoint exactly where it is? Sounds like a plugged duct to me, but I've never been achy. It took me two days to get rid of mine. My OBGYN told me to massage it towards the nipple while nursing. It randomly cleared. Hope it passes soon!
