Food Allergy

New with a ?

My LO was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 1 month. She never had any of the traditional tummy issues, just a horrible eczema flare. Nutramigen has been a life saver for us. Fast forward to now and she's had the same reaction to both rice cereal and oatmeal. So for now we're back to strictly formula. Neither one of our families have any food allergies so DH and I are a little lost. We plan on discussing this with her pedi at her 6 month appointment.

Any ideas on what we're in for? Any tips on what I could research? TIA for any help!

  • does the cereal have milk or soy in it?  Which brand did you use? try earths best b/c that one doesn't have soy/milk.

If that is the one you use, i would hold off until you talk to your pedi

Also, no one in my fam or DH's fam have allergies either so this was a complete shock for us.  we didn't realize it until my son was 8 months and had a ana reaction to touching egg. so your one step ahead of the game by recognizing signs.

  • I would seek out a pediatric allergist, which I would assume your pedi may recommend anyway.

My daughter was the same as yours in that she has a milk protein allergy and is also allergic to rice and oats.  She has 15 or so other allergies besides those.  It is very hard trying to find foods for her to eat, but like you, her formula (Neocate) has been a life saver.

You could be in for a very hard road, or you could find out that she will outgrow her allergies and have no problems.  It is a waiting, and re-testing, game from here on out!

  • The first one we tried (Gerber) did so we took a break to let her clear up then switched to Earth's Best but she had the same reaction. Sad

    Thanks for your help!

could be a wheat reaction.  I would avoid it until you speak to your pedi and/or get her tested. the good news is that they really don't need oatmeal that young.  i know a bunch of people that avoided it for other reasons but it's really not required.
