A few days after 2 YO he stopped sleeping and in desperation we put him to sleep in the guest room, in the big bed....he never left. We moved his toys and some of his things in to "kid it up a bit" but we left it pretty plain and simple.

When Ben was about 2 1/2 I moved him into his "big boy room" but that was actually a whole new room. I kept the nursery as is for Cooper. When Cooper is ready to move, I'm moving him down to another room too. Then what is the nursery will become the guest room with all of my craft crap in it I guess. It's a small room, so I hope I can make it work. But our house is set up weird... there's the master bedroom and one small bedroom at one end of the hall, so that's where we put the nursery. Then down at the other end, you go past the bonus room, then there's 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. So it makes sense for that whole "wing" to be the kids' space.
I never got a chance to decorate when the kids were little - I would randomly buy stencils and wall paper border to do their rooms but it wasn't until we moved into our current house that I had time/money/support to do it (my ex husband was a douche about stuff like that). They were 7&9 at the time. And they'd never had a decorated room before that. My daughter just this year finally re-decorated her room - we went from ballerinas to bold paint (green, pink, orange and blue) and IKEA lighting at age 17!! My son's room is still sports themed and we will re-decorate that as soon as he makes it 30 days with a clean room...he seems in no hurry.

I am there right now....brainstorming anyway. We got rid of all his crib bedding when we changed to his toddler bed - and now the "jungle theme" doesn't quite fit (jungle decals on walls etc).
I wanted to pick something that HE was really into, but he's not obsessing on anything really yet. One day it's all about animals, then trucks, then dinosaurs - LOL. I'm thinking I might just take down the decals, keep his messy masterpiece, a new piece of art DH and I are working on...and maybe some photos of our family?
Then just pick some nicer bedding soon when he lands on something he likes - or maybe let him pick out something at Target
I'm in the midst of it this now. The painted stripes we had for his nursery were starting to wear out their welcome, I found some great bedding and snatched it up as the company was going out of business. Because of timing, I painted before DH patched the holes from moving the baseboard heater and some shelves so I'm repainting those sections this week.
I went with neutral walls (but gradient strips for interest) so I can switch out themes if he ever wants. This is the "theme" for now.
Hopefully, he'll have a twin bed by the end of the month. And the shelves rehung. And the rug assembled.
This was a far more intensive project than I anticipated, so hold off as long as you can.
