ferberizers: how did you handle naps?

did you do the same CIO method with naps? ANY advice on making naps work?

he has been going down okay for his 9 a.m. nap, but he almost always has 15+ minutes of crying before his 1 a.m. nap, and we're on ferber day 11 here. i don't think it's for lack of being tired--yesterday when he finally got to sleep he slept for 90 minutes until i woke him.

i'm sitting here listening to him scream and cry--i want to scream and cry too. this is killing me. =(

Re: ferberizers: how did you handle naps?

  • Why did you wake him up? The only time I Wake Jake is if we have somewhere to go or it's past 5pm.. Otherwise I let him sleep as long as he wants.. Usually though for both of his naps he won't sleep longer then 2hrs and can be as short as 45ms. As far as Ferber we followed the same patter as night time.. Jake now is currently in his crib playing and trying to put himself to sleep.. I won't go in unless he is crying. Hope thy helps! It will get better!!

  • I'm confused...why is he taking a nap at 9 and a nap at 1?  Is he taking another nap after that?

If he is still at three naps a day, I might try going to two and see what happens.

As far as the Ferber thing, I'd stick to my guns.  You guys will figure this thing out, I promise.

  • he's only taking two naps. as for waking him up, it's because ferber said you have to be careful not to let them sleep extra during the day because it will make things harder at night. but we don't have a real good idea of what is normal daytime sleep for our little guy and what is "extra" because we were never able to get into a real regular schedule.

    sigh. this is hard.

  • Okay, now I understand.

I think that there is a chart in Ferber's book that tells you how sleep is broken down at what ages. I'm thinking he even breaks it down into how long the naps 'should' be? Maybe use that as a guideline?

FWIW, I never wake my child up from a nap, unless we had a Dr's appt or something else to go to.  I'm thinking I would let him sleep, and maybe only wake him up up if he sleeps past a certain time in the afternoon?

I really do think that sleep begets sleep.  I know that the better Caroline naps during the day, the better she sleeps at night.

  • I totally agree with dana316. I wouldn't wake from a nap unless I had to, or unless it went within maybe 3 hours (for an infant) of bedtime. We tend to follow Weissbluth's general advice about sleep while using Ferber's graduated extinction method. Weissbluth says to never wake a sleeping baby (unless it's to protect their nap schedule, but this is a complicated point that he makes later). I've also found that sleep begets sleep...when naps are better, nighttime sleep is better, too.

There may be some tweaking that you'll need to do with naptimes, or, I'm sorry to say, he may just fight the afternoon nap for a while. DS1 got to the point where he would go down silently, but his afternoon nap was routinely only 30 minutes.

Hang in there, Mama. This stuff is incredibly hard.
