Pre-School and Daycare

What will you do with your child for the summer?

For those that work, what will you do with your child in the summer?  My son's school is a daycare then pre-school which currently offers summer school, but I was thinking about how when he gets older and actually has a summer, like when he starts Kinder - what will I do with him for the summer?  He will be too old for the daycare he is in now and it is the only one I would consider sending him to in our area.  They don't offer programs for older children.

There is a summer school about 20 - 25 minutes from our house and they offer summer camps where the kids get to go on field trips, etc. and it is something in the back of my mind, but it's farther, plus costs more than the daycare I pay now and will only continue to go up.  I guess if it's my only option we will make it work, but just curious what others do.

  • Our Daycare offers a summer program for 5yr till 12yrs.  In that program they have Monday-Fitness and Fun(golf, soccer), Tuesday-Swim Lessons, Wednesdays and Thursday's-Field Trips, and Friday-Craft and Fun day.  I work at the daycare so that is what she will be doing next year.

  • I'm a SAHM, but my girls (ages 4 and 5) are going to half-day summer camp........

If I were working, they would be in a full day summer camp. We have tons of options around here.

  • Fortunately we use a nanny so I don't have to worry about changing w/daycare.

We are putting Harmon in a Summer Camp and he is going to the NMSU speech camp as well.  If I left him at home with our nanny all day he would be so bored!

  • Most school districts (at least in my area) offer full day care, similar/same as extended school day care. Our parks and rec department also does this- they call it "camps". I have one very zealous coworker who sends his kids to different camps every week in the summer- science museum camp, history center camp, girl scout camp, etc. Lots of planning, but he says its only a little more expensive than sending the kids to daycare and the kids love it.

  • I'm a teacher, so I'll have summers off, but this year DD is going to summer camp for 4 days (2 days/wk for 2w). I went to GS camp when I was younger and it was some of the best times of my childhood, so I'd love to do that for the kids too.

  • We think we will have them attend the summer camp offered by the elementary school.  There are few other options in town, though. Our daycare has a program for school aged kids. Once they get older, we will also take them to spend a couple of weeks with my family and then one of my parents can fly them back. Not only will my parents love having them visit but my kids will be able to practice Spanish while enjoying a visit to the Caribbean. I hope they like that.  A friend use to do that with his sons and they loved it.

  • I have a more flexible schedule and DH is a SAHD for right now so I don't worry about this too much.

However - my mom had this problem when I was a kid. She found SAHMs that were parents of kids in my classroom who could take me for the summer. I don't think I even realized until I was much older that I was being "babysat" - I just went to Stacey's house to play everyday.

Summer camp!  On-site/off site field trips based on age, afternoon science experiments, creative cooking classes, water fun, music, etc.

Most places offer summer camps for school aged children.  I would recommend checking online to see what's available.

  • I haven't decided yet for the future but for now and at least the next few years, I will use our school summer program.  My older DD is in a PreK program that includes summer and then for the kids K-6, they have a great program at the school that includes a bunch of field trips and stuff and you can go all summer or as little as 2 weeks.  I know we'll do that the 1st year or two and then start adding in some summer day camps that are offered all over through our temple and just local community stuff and when they get older, they will go to a summer overnight camp.  We may look into hiring a nanny for the summer as well although I work from home at the moment so if I am still doing that, that option would be out unless I can nanny share with a friend and just have the kids at their house the whole time.  I am sure it will end up being a combo of things.  Almost forgot, the daycare that my younger DD is at has a summer school age program for kids up until 5th grade that covers both summer and school breaks.  The only reason we are not considering doing that is that I would rather have my kids at their school with their friends vs the daycare which would have other kids but necessarily the kids that they are with all the time.  The temple camp would also have some of their friends and the kids that they will go to religious school with plus some others.
