Cloth Diapering

Washing new diapers

I'm expecting my first CD's in the mail today (BG Elementals). I know they need to be washed and dried several times before I use them. Can I skip the detergent during these first washes? Or use detergent on the first wash and then not on the next 2 or 3?

Re: Washing new diapers

  • As far as I know you should use detergent on each washing.

I like to check the product page on jilliansdrawers.com when I'm unsure of a brand's care guide. It usually tells you how to prep the diaper and how to regularly care for it.

On the BG Elementals page it says this:

    General Care

Wash any temperature up to 150F. Tumble dry medium.

How to prepare for first use

bumGenius! Organic All In One diapers must be washed four times on hot with lots of detergent.  That's wash-dry-wash-dry-wash-dry-wash-dry. If these prewashes are not done, the diaper may leak because the inner cotton will still repel liquid.
