NYC w/ 5 yr old DD for the day - what to do besides American Girl?

We're taking DD to NYC for the day for her 5th birthday.  We're taking her to the American Girl store to shop and for breakfast.  We'd also like to do a few other things while we're there.  Any ideas for things kids love near the store (Fifth Avenue at 49th Street)?

 TIA!

  • It's a few blocks away (and feels like a country away when lugging an overweight 3 year old and packages with you...sorry, I digress) but there is a HUGE TRU there (I think in Times Square).  There is a ride in there (or rides) and it's a HUGE store.  Something to see, for sure.

Enjoy your day!  I'm entertaining the idea of doing this for Cam's 5th birthday -- can't decide if I want to invite friends or make it a "family day" (just the four of us) or what not.  So fun!

  • Go to the Central Park Zoo! It's really great. 65th and 5th.

Take her to the Museum of Natural History. or Madamme Tussauds Wax Museum in Times Square.

In my bag: Nikon D90; 35mm 1.8, 90mm 2.8 macro (my fave), Lensbaby Composer with macro extensions. BFP after 13 cycles and one ectopic. Lost left tube 5/19/10.

  • Take her to the Plaza to see all the Eloise things! Central Park carriage ride...Toys R Us...Time Square...FAO
  • Dylan's Candy Bar, for sure!  I can't remember the exact address, but it's not super far from American Girl. (I just looked, it's at 60th and 3rd).  Go for a manicure/pedicure!  Claire loves doing this at the little random nail salon by my aunt's (where we visit at least every few months).  It's always so fun.  Central Park Zoo is great because it's small enough that you don't feel pressured to stay all day there.

Not to be dumb, but did you already make your reservations for the cafe at American Girl?  I had no idea when I tried to make reservations in January that you have to call f.o.r.e.v.e.r. in advance, and we didn't get to eat there.  It was a huge bummer.

    Have fun!

  • I was just there 2 weeks ago with my 4 and 5 year olds.  We did AG and had lunch there.  So fun!!  We also went to the huge Toys R Us and just wandered around and rode the ferris wheel.  They loved Times Square.  We went to the Today Show and they thought that was really cool.  There's huge M&M and Hershey's stores.  Also, I think on Saturdays, Pinkalicious is showing somewhere off Broadway.  Have fun!!
