Food Allergy

Who here is Top-8 free?

Just curious what resources you use in terms of recipes and cooking, or if you just fiddle around a lot and improvise?

DH is a cook and he has taken it upon himself to modify as many recipes as possible to be Top-8 free. He's made cream soups, chicken marsala, risotto, and so many other things for me. I love it!

As for recipes, my go-to cookbook is Sophie-Safe Cooking (I can do oats--a lot of the recipes are oat-based). I love it because the ingredients can all be found in my pantry without having to go out of my way to a specialty store to get random things. I also have several Cybele Pascal cookbooks.

  • ummm... share?  :) your DH  sounds awesome!!!!  as soon as i took away all products that contain my sons allergies from the house -his cooking times were done.

I have to get Sophie-Safe Cooking.. i read it multpile times on here.

btw - Cybele Pascal is awesome!  Love her mac & "cheese" recipe

Btw - my son is allergic to 4 our of the 8.  so he has a ton of wheat and we might be introducing fish soon.. so i'm  not much help.  Here is one of my favorite location for some inspirations -->  https://intolerantoffspring.com/

  • We are close. We have some nuts but not many. Some DD is allergic to and some are known to have high mold content which we really avoid since DS vax injury. We also have fish about 3x a week but choose (not due to allergies) not to eat shellfish or any "bottom feeders". We eat a ton of veggies, raw and cooked, wild rice, high quality meats and organic fruit. Thanks for posting the resources, I'll check them out!
  • Well, for one thing, Vance's Dari-Free is a staple in our cupboards. In anything calling for milk or cream, we use it as a substitute. If the cream in the recipe is to make the recipe creamy (like in thickness) then we add some cornstarch to thicken whatever we're cooking. I use Enjoy Life's Crunchy Rice for anything that needs to be breaded--I toss it in my food processor with some seasonings (like onion powder, Italian seasoning, etc.). It really makes a great breading for chicken and pork!

Being Top-8 free is hard, and it takes time figuring it all out, but what sucks is I am also raw fruit and veggie-free (so no salads, biting into an apple, etc. due to severe oral allergy syndrome) .

Also, for $25/mo you can become a member of kidswithfoodallergies.org and they have a recipe database of lots of Top-8 free and allergy-free recipes. The only thing is that I find (again) that a lot of the recipes call for things I don't usually stock in my pantry.

  • DS is.  But he only has one safe food and we are trialing pears right now.  So he is pretty much everything free.
