BF: Low Supply, Increase Later?

Kind of a weird question... I start back to work tomorrow and am pretty sure my supply is going to take a hit. I'm a teacher and my clas schedule won't allow for me to pump until close to 12:15ish. I will be going about 6 hours without pumping. While I'm going to do my best to keep up my supply the best I can, I think I have to face the facts that it will go down a bit. We've been combo feeding, so it's ok.

My question is, once my supply decreases, will I be able to increase it again in the summer once school is out? Is that something that is always possible, as long as you continue to produce SOMETHING over time?

  • I'm a teacher, too, and I started back to school on Wednesday.  Pumping at school has been driving me nuts. I want to spend all the time I can at school doing school stuff and not worry about it when I get home.  I'm an interventionist, and my schedule is a little different each day.

Pumping is driving me  nuts, and I'm contemplating stopping and just feeding him what I can when I'm at home.  I'm also hoping that my supply will stay up for the summer.  But by then, we'll be starting solids anyway.

  • My best advice if you are a combo feeder is to let go of the supply stress and just go with it.  Nurse or pump when you feel uncomfortable or have the chance and just don't worry about it otherwise.  With both of my kids, I started out majorly stressing over supply and both times I eventually just gave up and decided that a little formula was the best for everyone.  And with both kids my supply went way up once I made this conscious decision.  In fact, this time around, its gone up so much that we are only supplementing with 2 oz of formula a day and that is just to keep her used to it in case I need to give it to her at daycare at some point.  Trust your body- it will figure out what it needs to do and will probably just start to make more milk in the afternoons/evenings when you are with your baby.  I know it doesn't seem like that could possibly happen, but believe me, it does.  Your body knows what to do.

  • I'm not a teacher, but I will be returning to work during a very busy season and am worried about finding the time to pump. I talked to an LC and she said if my supply took a hit, that I should be able to get it back up in the summer (when my work stuff slows WAY down).
