Food Allergy

Do gluten and dairy sensitivities/allergies always go together?

New to this GF/DF world, sorry....

I'm avoiding both due to auto-immune pregnancy loss issues. I'm curious if I can have one or the other, or if the two usually go hand in hand?

(I'm on limited time to play around eliminating/adding back in)

And while I'm asking.... who do I see about testing for this? Can a GP run these tests, a regular immunologist, or who?

Thx.

Re: Do gluten and dairy sensitivities/allergies always go together?

  • Not sure if this is helpful or not.  My daughter is extremely allergic to dairy and has outgrown her wheat allergy.  She is allergic to barley, but not rye.

I would either see an allergist about testing, or have your GP write an order for blood testing.

  • i don't believe they go together.. many people have a dairy allergy alone or a gluten allergy alone. Like pp said -get tested.
  • No, they don't go hand in hand.  DS has celiac disease and has never had issues w/ dairy.

way down at the bottom it mentions one reason why the two often seem connected for people:

Finally, we also now know that when you are gluten intolerant ? which 33% (if not more) of you are ? you will also ?cross-react? with other foods that have a similar ?molecular signature? to gluten and its components. Unfortunately, the list of these foods (shown below) contains all grains, which is why some medical practitioners (myself included) recommend not just a gluten-free diet, but an entirely grain-free diet. As you can see, it also contains other foods like dairy (alpha & beta casein, casomorphin, milk butyrophilin) and coffee (which is a very common cross-reactant).

    • alpha-caesin
    • beta-caesin
    • casomorphin
    • milk butyrophilin
    • cow?s milk
    • american cheese
    • chocolate
    • coffee
    • all cereal grains
    • quinoa
    • amaranth
    • buckwheat
    • tapioca
    • rice
    • potato
    • corn
    • sesame

  • My Jacob is allergic to dairy, but didnt show up for wheat. Wheat and soy are pretty much in everything he eats, actually. We saw an allergist for testing after getting the blood test at his Pedi.

  • My DDs and I were lactose intolerant when we were first diagnosed with celiac disease but as the intestines healed we were able to tolerate dairy again.
    .
  • Nope, I'm allergic to gluten but fine with dairy and casein.

Like pp said, the issue is often casein, since it's molecularly so similar to gluten.

  • If your gluten intolerance is celiac disease then you will never outgrow it. Have you had a intestinal biospy done to know if you have celiac disease? Very frequently people with celiac disease will also have other intolerances, dairy is a frequent one. After the intestine has time to heal they can often (not always) add those other foods back in, but have to avoid gluten for the rest of their lives.

My GI (gastroint.) tested me for Celiac.

How did you find out your loss was due to auto-immune issues?  Just curious b/c I'm a worried about the same thing.

    TIA!
