I've stayed at the Sandcastle Condos on multiple occasions and have always been pleased.
ETA: I've also stayed at the Holiday Inn Express a couple times. It is nice - esp. considering it is a major chain - and is pretty clean. I just feel like for the $$ you can get much more bang for your buck at one of the condo facilities.
We're going this weekend and staying at the Holiday Inn Express, my mom said it's newer and nice. Unfortunately when I was pregnant a friend of mine and I went and stayed at Sandcastle condos and had an AWFUL experience, it was disgusting (roaches, blood on sheets, huge unidentifiable stain on couch to name a few). I didn't think I would ever go back but I trust Holiday Inn. Have fun!
Every year a group of us go and I usually get a condo or house from these people. We go for 4 night and it works out to be cheaper than a hotel when I checked this year. They are super nice and have a lot of options to choose from. This year I got a 1 bedroom with a washer/dryer and a kitchen for 400$ for 4 nights and it was going to cost me $150/$200 a night at least in the Holiday Inn.

Ewwww!! I hate to hear this! I'm sorry to hear you had a crappy experience. We love, love, love Sandcastle condos. We have stayed at least 3 times now and we have always had a great experience. I love that there is a gorgeous pool, and a boardwalk to walk right onto the beach. And I like that we have been able to pick out which condo we want to stay in based on the virtual photo tour of each condo on their website.
We stayed at the Sandcastle and loved it. Not sure how familiar you are with Port Aransas, but you can drive up to the beach there, so finding beachfront lodging is not as important as other beachy destinations.
I second La Mirage (https://www.lamirage-portaransas.com/). I've stayed at Port Royal a few times. Though it is nicer than most of the condo facilities and has the best pool in Port A, I thought their rates were really high, but I was staying during one of the holiday weekends. I just think their higher rates didn't enhance our vacation experience any better.
We stayed at Port Royal 2 weeks ago. Condos are updated and very nice. Roomy, updated and room for kids and us without issue. 3 pools and right on the beach. A bit further out but not bad at all.
Also have heard good things about the Aransas Princess and Sandpiper.
We are staying at the Aransas Princess in 2 weeks, so I'll update when we get back. The only annoying thing there is that they say "no diaper age children in the pool", and this is a family trip with Ruby. But I have heard very good things about the place from a friend that has stayed there 4 times.

We stayed at Sandpiper the first time we went. Had a fabulous condo on the top floor.
On our trip last month, we rented a beach house since we had a small group going (this place). It was great!
Sandpiper is my first favorite, followed by Mustang Towers.
Also, not on the water but super super cute is Sea Shell Village. They were cheaper when we stayed there, but that was 6ish years ago.
