Baby Names

Raquel?

What do you think of the name Raquel? This was SO's grandmother's name, and we've been throwing some family names into the mix for possibilities of a FI or MN. Notes: LO will have a Spanish last name, I do not like Rachel as an alternative, and yes, Raquel Welch comes to mind for me.

Re: Raquel?

  • I haven't seen this name since HS and I grew up in a predominatly Hispanic area. I was never a fan of it back then but it doesn't sound so bad now.

  • I really don't like the sound or spelling. I actually didn't realize it was Spanish because the Raquel I know is not from a Spanish background (maybe I just live in a strange area).

I don't really like it...nms.  I would use it as a middle name though for his grandmother.

Ugh I've never liked it either. It's so harsh sounding.

  • I love it. It was in the running for a mn for DD. However, I think it sounds a lot better in Spanish than in English. Do you live in an area where people are likely to pronounce it correctly?

  • Hate Rachel LOVE Raquel.

It was on our list with both girls but would have been for a MN. Went with names that had family meanings instead so for you it is a win, win! Great name and meaning. Good luck

How is it pronounced in Spanish? Is it not rah-kell?

OP, I'm just "eh" on this name. I'd never use it or consider it, but it's a perfectly fine choice.

  • I'm sure this will sound strange but I think it is a great name for an adult but and awkward name for a baby or child.

The R is rolled--not a huge difference, but it sounds prettier. As for pronouncing it the Spanish vs. English way, I think it would be hit and miss (family would pronounce it the Spanish way, though).

The R sounds different in Spanish and the "ah" is slightly more open than it is in English. I can't spell it phonetically.

  • I HATE this name with incomprehensible fury. I have one of the WORST personal associations one could ever have with a name. And I've never thought it was a nice name, even before this. However, I think giving your child Raquel as a mn to honour his gma is just fine.
