installing baby gate on baseboard & banister - use shims?

We have thick/high baseboards on the left side of the doorway, and a banister on the other. To further complicate things, the banister is square at the bottom and round at the top.  So on each side of the doorway, the only way we can think of to level it, is to use shims. Has anyone done this? How's it holding up?

  • Our banisters are like that as well and we used the Kidco Y Spindle for our banisters.  It works great...doesn't budge.  The bottom of our banister is just wide enough to accomodate the pressure mount disks and we used the Y Spindle on top.

We have the same set-up.  We got the Perfect Fit gates by Safety First.  They are pricey ($40) but they do fit perfectly, and a bonus is that they look nice and the kiddos can't climb them.

  • We got a Kidco kit as well for the top of our stairs, works great!
