Food Allergy

How about we "introduce" ourselves...

As in what allergies are you dealing with?

My son (2.5) has celiac disease.  He was diagnosed a year ago this month and he can't have any wheat or gluten.

  • Joey, 6, has a nut allergy.  To be honest, I suck at keeping track of which 4 nuts he's allergic to so we just avoid all of them.

His allergy does seem to be going away with time.  When he was originally tested, he was at a 13 or something like that.  Last time, he was at a 9 (I guess an 8 indicates an allergy).  So I'm hoping this won't be a lifelong allergy for him.

Cam has had nuts now -- and has had no reaction.  But she has not had peanut butter yet (which is what caused the reaction for Joey).  I'm scared to try!  LOL

  • My son is 3 1/2. His current food allergies are wheat, soy, all cow and goat products, beef, carrot, egg.

His first diagnosis was at 1 year old, and things have changed a lot. At that time he was only able to have 6 foods, so we have made good progress!

  • DS, Aiden, has allergies to Peanuts (severely allergic), tree nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios), and cats.  His next allergy test will be in October when he turns 4.

We found his allergy when I gave him a try of peanut butter at 16 months old and ended up in the ER.  We have no family history of food allergies.

My 2.5 yo daughter is allergic to honey, beeswax and more than likely bee stings.

  • My kids are almost 10mo old twins.  We suspect a legume allergy (all peas, beans, and peanuts), a corn allergy, and a problem with cow's milk.  They have had all kinds of strange reactions including a hives-like rash around the mouth and eyes and digestive problems.  We are doing allergy testing at 12mo to get to the bottom of it all.

  • DD was diagnosed at 8 months with soy and peanut allergies.  She also has severe eczema and wheezing.

She has had a peanut food challenge and made it to the 8th out of 11 doses with only hives as a reaction.  Her soy challenge was canceled last month due to wheezing and is re-scheduled for Aug.  Her pedi, allergy doc and I all feel something else is going on so she is scheduled for a skin prick test in July, all other testing has been blood tests.

DS had a milk protein allergy and severe reflux as an infant.  We spent a week in the hospital before we had a "happy spitter".  He just turned 2 and we were able to blood test which came back free of all allergens.

  • Two of my DDs (7 and 4) and I have celiac disease -- so we're gluten-free.  And my 10 y/o is allergic to red dye 40.

  • I don't have children, but I found out about this board and wanted to post! I recently found out that I am gluten intolerant. I don't have full-blown celiac disease, and I'm not sure how careful I need to be with cross-contamination or anything yet. This is all very new to me. I'm so excited to get suggestions for g-free goodies!
  • Both of my kids have a dairy protein intollerance ... still (IgG vs. IgE - or is it the other way around, I can never remember).  DS had a suspected peanut allergy up until he was 5 y/o when he passed his peanut challenge.

My almost 3 year old DS, Justin is allergic to milk. He also seems to have issues with berries.

Emily (5 years old), seems to have outgrown her berry and citrus allergy, but now is having issues with milk. I don't think it's an actual allergy, but maybe lactose intolerance. She ended up in the ER, but we chose not to do the intolerance test at this time (we just avoid lactose).

Hi ladies! Do any of you know what caused the food allergies? I am allergic to more things than I care to count and I am wondering if it can be passed to my baby?

Good luck with dealing with the allergies, it can be a pain in the butt and also down right scary. I hope you kids grow out of it soon!

  • Owen is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts and many tree nuts.  We are going to take Mia in today for blood work and if there are any red flags, we will go forward with skin testing.  I am not totally sure what I will do if she is not allergic, but we will remain a nut-free and mostly egg-free house for sure.

Thanks to those who were asking for this board!

My son is allergic to strawberries and eggs (both the yolk and the white). Strawberries cause a rash around his mouth, and so far eggs cause him to vomit (a lot) and break out in hives on his face, arms, back, stomach, and feet.

We also suspect he has Celiac Disease, and he'll be tested for that in July at his next doctor visit. Cutting out wheat/gluten cleared up his eczema completely, but his blood work at his 12 mo. visit showed no wheat allergy.

  • My DD (3) has a severe tree nut allergy.  Found it out about a year ago when she had some cashews that landed her in the ER.  She had had cashews and other tree nuts before but we were told it could take several exposures to produce a full out allergy reaction that you recognize.  We have a jr epi-pen we carry.  Her allergy tests prove that she's allergic to peanuts as well but has never presented a reaction so her allergist says well keep on giving them until she can't take it.  We only stay away from tree nut products for now.  Honestly I am careful about not giving her tree nuts or products containing tree nuts but I don't pay attention to the "manufactured in facilities, etc etc".  So far she hasn't reacted again.  Her allergist says essentially she's a "ticking time bomb" as it relates to allergies so we're just prepared to be able to help her with whatever reaction she may have in the future.

She also takes zyrtec daily for seasonal allergies and has a bunch of creams/lotions for eczema flareups.

We have no history of food allergies in the family and I thought I had done everything "right" in terms of avoiding allergies...who knows.

  • I'm Jackie! My son Ryan (17 months) is allergic to bananas for sure. A lot of other foods make him break out in a rash around his mouth. The banana allergy is the most serious as of now. We will be getting a referral for an allergist at his 18 month appointment since banana allergies can be indicative of a latex allergy as well.

  • My son (28 months) has a severe peanut allergy.  He was diagnosed about a year ago when we "tried" peanut butter for the first time.

He was tested for other tree nuts but it's just the peanuts.  Which really doesn't help because you can't trust any nut because odds are they were processed in the same plant as peanuts.

  • My daughter Ava has a milk and egg allergy. We honestly didn't know about the egg (it came up during one of her many rast tests) and she has been allergic to milk since she was born.

She gets hives where any milk product has come in contact with her.

  • Hi- I have a 6 month old who so far doesn't seem to have any allergies, but I have celiac, and oddly enough I just did a search for celiac on TB today, then amazingly noticed this new board. I live in an almost entirely GF house (DH is "allowed" to have his own bread for sandwiches he takes to work, but everything else- pasta, cookies, cereal is GF), and am concerned for my daughter. So far she's had limited food, but I'm nervous about introducing wheat to her.

  • Hi!  i'm Mag, my son is 18 months old and he was diagnosed at 8 months old with an allergy to Milk, Soy, Eggs, Peanuts, Sesame (he outgrew sesame -yay).

Since birth he had major eczema and swelling and no one pointed out that it could be an allergy. I breast fed him so he was reacting to my diet.

At 8 months old he touched a piece of my scramble egg and went into a complete ana shock.  After a night in the ER and my hair turning gray our lives have changed forever.

  • My little one has Dairy, Egg and Nut.  She swells on Dairy and hives on Egg.  Not sure about Nut but we just avoid it.  I hate her exzema, it is awful.   I find allergies to be very hard.  I hope she outgrows them!
  • Natalie has a peanut allergy.   She also has eczema and I'm wondering if it's connected to other allergies.....

I have an allergy to beans and mango.

  • My daughter, Samantha, will be 3 in June and has a peanut allergy.  We found out when she was 18 months and I gave her a PB&J for the first time.  We are thankful that her numbers are giong down and are hopeful that this won't be life long for her.  We are possibly doing a food challenge depending on her numbers.  She will get rechecked again this summer.

Zachary is 6 months old he hasn't really had any food, so we will see when the time comes how to handle things.

There is no history of food allergies in DH or myself.

I can't imagine how scary that must have been!

Hi!  I am Jill, I have several food allergies, oranges being the worst and peanuts being a mild allergy.  DS is 2.5 but has some severe eating issues, story in bio.  The pedi has warned us it could be allergy related although we have not found anything yet other than he is very sensitive to my black pepper intake (we are still nursing).  We tried peanut butter for the first time this past weekend.  He licked some a peanut butter cup and had no reaction but we still plan to watch him since allergies can build up and/or develop.

There are a lot of mamas out there dealing with allergies for themselves and their LOs.  I am very happy to see this board!

  • K is allergic to egg and milk. We found out at 1yo when I introduced egg, she has alergic asthma. She doesn't gets any rash, just the breathing problems.

She's on asthma treatment now and we clearly see a difference in her. DH also discovered some allergies (non food). We are hopeful she can outgrow them.

    and happy for this blog!

My daughter Madeleine is 6 months and has a milk and soy protein allergy.  This was diagnosed around 4 weeks along with reflux.  We are just now starting solids and so far haven't found anything else that bothers her but it does make me nervous.  DH's family doesn't have any history of allergies, but mine does.  I am lactose intolerant, and we also have peanut and shellfish allergies in the family.  Will be interesting to see Maddie outgrows this or if it is only the beginning!

  • DD (almost 3) has a dairy and egg allergy. She seems to be outgrowing it though. DS (1 month) has a suspected dairy, egg, and soy allergy. I was EBF and he started to have bloody stools while in the NICU. After extensive tests to ensure his intesteines were fine he was given a highly sensitive formula and the bleeding stopped. I have since gone dairy and soy free and resumed EBF. He has had no issues since than.

  • I am almost at the end of my first trimester and I have Celiac and Dermititus Herpetiformis (another Gluten allergy).  If I ingest gluten (or use shampoo or creams) with wheat/gluten in it I break out in a rash on my knees, elbows, lower back, hair line and butt, It's the itchiest diasese known to man.  It looks like poison ivy!

I am worried my LO will also have this so I am planning on not feeding any gluten to my child.

  • Hi!  I am Lindsay.  I am so excited to see this board.  I have Celiac and am newly pregnant with our 1st little one.  My husband and I eat GF and our new home will never have Gluten in it.  I am looking forward to sharing with this new community.
  • DS is 22 months and has the following allergies:

Dairy - Diagnosed at 8 months when he was given formula for the first time.  Rash, swelling, vomitting ensued.  He was diagnosed as severely allergic but has since outgrown a lot of it.  He still can't have cow's milk but does ok with small amounts of cheese, cream cheese, butter.  If he has too much the only indication is a mucousy diaper.

    Eggs - Severe allergy

Peanuts - Allergic but we don't know his threshold.  He can have about 1/2 a tsp of peanut butter with no issues.  His allergist suggested we give him small amounts regularly to desensitize him.  He's gone from breaking out in a rash from just a touch to tolerating 1/2 tsp.

Strawberries - Breaks out in a rash around his mouth and had an eczema flare on his cheecks with large doses of strawberries.

  • Hello everyone! I am allergic to tree nuts and my sister is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, soy and coconut. So I grew up in a nut-free home (long before they labeled packages).

My daughter is currently having reactions to very random foods and we are unsure if it is because her system is just slow to digest properly, or if she has full blown allergies. She has awful eczema. So for now we are watching her.

I hope that I will be able to contribute to the but conversations as I have dealt with it my whole life.

  • Hi,

My DD is a little over 7 mos and has had eczema issues since birth. I BF and cut out dairy when she was about 5 months old (neither her pedi or dermatologist suggested this!) and her skin has improved vastly but she still has issues.

My supply is dropping and I'll have to start supplementing. I'm scared to even give her soy formula but I need to at least test it out.

She has also had reactions to bananas and mangoes.

I'm so happy to see this board and get some advice! I'd like to do allergy testing but her pedi suggested waiting until 2 years. What caused your children's doctors to test sooner (if they did so)?

  • Most of our issues are explained in the siggy below. Ari started with just dairy, but over the first 14 months of his life he progressively added more allergies. Some of the allergies below are IgE mediated (as in he swells up, breaks out in hives all over, etc.), some are IgG mediated (GI symptoms and eczema/rashes). He also seems to have some pollen allergies, but we've not had him tested yet.

He also had pretty severe mostly silent reflux. We've weaned him off Prevacid just in the last few days & he seems to be doing well though.

Ari has such a severe corn allergy that his GI doc & allergist didn't want to go the Neocate route if I was willing to continue BFing. A small amount of Neocate on his skin actually broke him out. I was willing to continue BFing anyway. My DH is a fabulous cook & made it his mission to make sure we could maintain our nutritional needs & have tasty meals, so thanks to him we made it.

I learned that I have a dairy allergy through eliminating foods for Ari. I can tolerate occasional  cheese but that's it. Since adding back wheat & corn now that Ari is weaned, I think I may have an issue with one or both, so I just pulled both & will challenge in a few weeks.

  • Hi everyone!

I have three children.  One is recovering from a severe vaccine injury that left him very sensitive to chemicals and some foods.  He can't have gluten or dairy and we've also eliminated soy and corn.  He only eats 100% organic and gmo free as well.  Our middle child has a long list of allergies including gluten, milk, cheese, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, tomatoes, soy, grapes, coconut, peas and oats.  My oldest, our one teenager, doesn't have any allergies but he struggles with the restrictions and food changes bc of the little kids.
