unless you have a pet and want to keep the door open but not have the animals in the babys room I wouldn't worry about it right now. We didn't get one until we switched from crib to the toddler bed.

Yes becaue eventually you will need it. We registered bowls, spoons, and other things we wouldn't need until they were 6+ months. You will be grateful if someone gets it for you and not having to get it yourself.
We did, for the same reason's PPs already said- we have a dog who we want to keep out of the baby's room until he's used to him/her and all those cute baby sounds that sometimes startle dogs, and also because there were plenty of other things we registered for that we won't necessarily need right away, but would help us out a lot if we received them as gifts.
I registered for a top of stairs gate, but will find other gates at garage sales.
What is the difference between a top of stairs gate and a regular gate? Can it also be used like a regular gate? Is it just how it's affixed to the wall? I have 2 dogs and I more or less want it to keep them near (or away from) me and/or the baby so I'm not worrying about them getting into the baby's things or my things while baby is sleeping etc. I have a 2 story house so a stair gate will definitely be needed just for baby at some point.

I think top of stair gates usually have a door that opens so you aren't stepping over it and down onto a step. Basic gates are step over only.
