Selling Baked Goods at Yard Sale?

Has anyone ever done this?  If so, what would you considering buying and for how much?

BIL is having a yard sale this Fri/Sat and while I don't have much "junk" to sell right now the light bulb just clicked and I realized I may be able to make some dough by offering homemade treats, instead...

Re: Selling Baked Goods at Yard Sale?

  • I'd pay almost anything for baked goods. I'm an addict.
  • It depends on *the goods*, but typically I've seen them at yard sales for $.50-1.00.

  • Ahem, I am a yard sale queen- so.... Stick out tongue

If you are doing it, do water bottles and soda. $1.00 each. Treats can be $.50 or $1.00

You/your BIL also may want to consider setting up a grill and doing some hot dogs. People go nuts for hot dogs after a long tough day yard saling. lol.

  • Yard sale weekend is this weekend citywide for us and we have already been warned that a temporary permit to sell food is required.  Usually there are a lot of 'food' items for sale from Funnel Cakes to ice creams etc..  Just wanted to give you an FYI depending on the city it is being held at etc...

Interesting! I have never heard of this!

Hm yeah I wasn't sure about permits/board of health laws.  Do you know where I can find more info?  The sale will be in Maineville/Landen in case you heard anything specifically about that.

  • Thanks for all the thoughts ladies.

I XPed this to the Nat'l What's Cooking Board and it seems everyone there is skeeved out about the idea (and bake sales, too).  Glad to see folks here don't think I'm crazy for considering it.  Maybe it's a regional thing??

  • Well generally the baked sales are done by small children... just to keep the occupied and make a little money.

BUT, from what I have seen, they always go over well around here.

    I say go for it.

  • Actually neither had I and I have lived here over 10 years.  The annual citywide yard sale ALWAYS has food for sale but I think the county is who is clamping down on it so I guess check the county websites.

  • Hmmm I'm thinking this only applies to certain types of food (as stated "cooked food, food requiring refrigeration or frozen foods").

From what I can tell, Ohio has what's called the Cottage Food Law which does allow the sale of homemade bakery products (such as cookies, breads, brownies, cakes, pies, etc.); candy (including no-bake cookies, chocolate covered pretzels or similar chocolate covered non-perishable items); jams; jellies and fruit butter among other things (see link for full list) when following certain labeling guidelines.

I wish they would have said whether bakery products were exempt or not in that butler county document! lol.  Anyway, thanks for the info!

  • I always buy the goodies at garage sales!  I would sell pop and water for anywhere between $.50 and $1.00, and goodies for up to $2.00.  Goodluck:)
