Obgyn question, or go see reg doc? veryyy (tmi)

So Im not sure what to do. I have had the worst problems with hemrroids throughout this pregnancy. I currently have 4 small ones, very painful. Well now ive had bright red blood in all of my stools, and I know the blood isnt coming from the hemmroids. My Grandpa passed away from colon cancer, so It is a concern of mine. Would this be a question I could ask my Ob this week about... (shes gonna be down there anyway... embarassing)) or should I schedule an appt to have my regular doc take a look?

  • I am not sure what the correct answer is, but I would ask my OB.  They discussed hemmroids and prevention and treatment at the beginning of my pregnancy, and they ask about them on the paperwork I fill out every year at my checkup.  They could at least lead you in the correct direction especially since, like you said she'll already be down there and you already have to discuss all the embarrassing pregnancy stuff with her.

  • Ouch!  I would definitely ask your OB to start.  You could very well have internal hemis that are causing the bleeding.  Hopefully that is all it is!  I'm sure your OB will refer you out if he/she thinks it's necessary.

  • I'd call OB and tell them what's up.  Let them decide where to send you.  I wouldn't wait to call, especially if you're that worried.

  • I've had this before and it was from internal hemrroids. They did a colonoscopy to check (because we have every type of cancer in my family) and confirmed it was just from the internal ones. My doctor told me that typically bright red blood is a better sign than anything, but they may still want to make sure its not anything else. I doubt they would do a colonoscopy while PG (I could totally be wrong) because you are close enough to your EDD that they could put it off until afterwards. But either way, I had to go to a specialist that my regular doctor referred me to. Since you do have hemrroids, more than likely there are internal ones as well...so I'll hope for your sake thats all it is! Definitely mention it to your OB though. Hope you feel better soon!
  • You probably have internal hemorrhoids. I have had bright red stools before. I've been seen by a GI and had testing done (lots of cancer in my fam). Bright red blood is better than dark blood. When there is darker blood, the docs get more concerned bc it means it has traveled throughout your digestive tract. I've never had any external hemorrhoids (knock on wood), but have had plenty of internal ones. I use Preparation H wipes every time I go to the bathroom. If you are really concerned, you could bring it up to either doctor. You'll see your OB soon, so you might as well mention it, but the GP is probably who I'd speak to.

  • Your OB will have a good referral if it needs further attention. After my 1st I had a small internal tear and he sent me to a good colorectal doc to get it resolved.
