Mirena?

If you have one would you recommend it? I know they say it's "safe" while BF buy it still worries me. We really dont want another child any time soon, and honestly the condoms don't get used the way they should to protect against pregnancy. I saw my OB today and she is on her 2nd one and loves it. and She also said it's probably the best/easiest option for me right now. WWYD? I'm just looking for EFFer thoughts/opinions. Thanks

Re: Mirena?

  • I have it! I got it... a week and a half ago? So far, so good. My OB thought it would be the easiest thing for me too, and even if we take it out next fall, it would have paid for itself. And *best part* nothing to try to remember to take at the same time every day!!!

  • I have the paragard, hormone free, lasts for 10 years.  I've had mine for 2 and have never had a problem with it.  The only downer is that you have a heavy period for a a day or two.  In my cycle I have one heavy day  and then normal the rest.  I know with the Mirena you have no/light period.  I went with this one specifically because it's hormone free.

I wasn't crazy about the whole IUD thing at first, but I hate condoms and other forms of protection similar to that.  And I DO NOT want anymore kids, lol.  So yeah, I vote for it. :)

  • I was up in the air between the paraguard and mirena.  I'm going to try the paragard, although I have heard questionable things about extra cramping and heavy periods.  I just wanted to be done with hormonal birth control and the acne and lowered sex drive that mirena said were possible side effects lead me to try the other first.  It was a hard choice, though, as the lighter/no periods with mirena is incredibly tempting!!

  • I had Mirena in for three years, and I loved it. Not only that, it was the only birth control I have ever used that didn't fail. Stick out tongue

As a kicker, I had it taken out so we could try for a baby, and I got pregnant within 10 days of getting it out...which was way sooner than I had thought.

  • I just had Mirena implanted in February and it was really terrible at first.  I had a period that lasted for 8 weeks - ugh!  I had my daughter in November and am EBF and hadn't had a period since she was born so it was a huge adjustment.  That being said - the bleeding finally stopped and now I'm happy with it.  It didn't cause a dip in my supply (which is what I had been worried about with other forms of BC) and I don't have to remember to take a pill.  I have PCOS and have always struggled with hormonal BC pills but this seems to be doing the trick.  I figured that I could always have it removed if I didn't like it but so far, so good.  Also - my insurance covered it which is a huge plus.  We're hoping to have another child in another year or two so I wasn't as concerned about 5 yrs vs. 10yrs.

  • I LOVE my Mirena. I had one between the girls and am now on my 2nd. No side effects, no complaints, no period.

Pros:  Two light periods, then no more.

Cons:  It killed my sex drive.

  • I had one after DS and while I had no side effects while on it (and got no periods while on it either), it took me 90 days to get my cycle back when I got it removed.

Also, one of my best friends had one and had an ectopic pregnancy with it.  Really scary.

  • Thanks girls. So, there is little to no worries about the transmittal to DD? I guess that's what I'm worried about is subjecting her to unnecessary horomones. All I can find on line and on the product insert is " it's safe during breast feeding ". I guess what does pass into BM, if any, is very little? The Paragaurd sounds good too, but I'm really diggin' the possibility of no periods.
  • I've had one since 6 weeks pp.

I don't know about hormone transferal.  I know the hormone release is significantly less than taking BCP.  Have you considered a paraguard (copper) IUD which doesn't use any hormones?

Yes, I'm considering that and the Mirena. Just the lighter/ no periods really sound good :)
  • I just had mine put in last Thursday and I've had almost constant cramping since. I went and had an US and it's in there right, just hating the cramps.

do it.  my cramping is no worse than it ever was before I had mine put in, actually most months I don't cramp at all, just that achey bloaty feeling right before I start that makes me feel yuck.   Like I said above, the heavy bleeding is bad for one day during the cycle, it's not that bad, annoying, but not bad.  Where a pad that day, lol.

NO LOWERED SEX DRIVE with the paragard.  Wink

added note:  I am prob one of the few who WANT to get my period every month.  It let's me know if I should be worried or not, lol.

  • I've had mine for a year. I had it while BFing DS and had no issues. In fact I haven't even had a period in a year!! I love it. Had to get the strings trimmed a bit for DH's comfort but other than that its been great.
  • I guess it depends on how important not getting pregnant is to you.

To us, not getting pregnant again is REALLY important. So I have the mirena.

I bled (spotted) about a month, that wasn't cool. now i love it.

  • I've had mine a little over 2 years and LOVE it.  When it was first inserted I had some light cramping and pain but nothing major.  I was EBF when I got it put in and continued to nurse till DS was 16 months old.  I have not had a period since before getting pg with DS.  I think the EBFing helped with not having the sometimes mentioned heavy first few periods.
