Sleep training ?'s

When people say "sleep training" do they mean Ferber?

If I wanted to read more about Feber, what book do I get?

If I wanted to read more about methods other than Feber, what book(s) do I get?

Am I being so 20th century when I say "book" - maybe I should be looking at websites instead?

Re: Sleep training ?'s

  • I actually got the book - https://www.amazon.com/Solve-Your-Childs-Sleep-Problems/dp/0671620991 - from the library; I xeroxed the relevant pages and re-used them for DS. I made up my own times w/ smaller intervals

there is also this book https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_31?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=healthy+sleep+habits+happy+baby&sprefix=healthy+sleep+habits+happy+baby which I also read

I read up on the "no cry sleep solution" online

I don't think CIO is the only method, others will be able to recommend more books

Tonight is 4 weeks since we started Ferberizing, DS was up at 3:30am last night after not waking up the night before (of course, DH's beeper went off in the middle of night so I still did not STTN!!!)

    GOOD LUCK!

  • I like Baby 411's chapter on sleep methods that compares and rates different methods; you could probably read the chapter at the library or a bookstore (if someone else was watching the kids).

Ferber's book is "Solve Your Children's Sleep Problems" (revised 2006). I also checked it out from the library before buying it - it was worth it to have it on hand. I sleep trained at 5.5 months with Ferber.

I read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child" by Weissbluth and IMO it read like stereo instructions. Being sleep-deprived, I really appreciated the step-by-step Ferber instructions. Both are CIO methods, but with Ferber you check on your baby progressively and Weissbluth recommends "extinction" so you don't re-enter the room and rile up the kid.

The others I've heard recommended are No-Cry Sleep Solution and Sleep Lady Shuffle.

  • Sofka's got a good list.  I jsut wanted to say good luck!  Ferber worked well and quickly for both kids.

  • If you choose to do Ferber, I would really highly recommend reading the book, not just a few pages. There is a lot more in there than the CIO technique - like sleep associations, routines, etc. I just loaned my copy out, otherwise I would offer it to you.

I liked this book as well.  It tells you all about sleep - what is the normal range, when you should expect changes etc.  I thought it had a broader coverage than just the Ferber book, which I read as well.  We went with the extinction CIO method in HSHHC where you do not go in every so many minutes and it worked quickly (a few nights) for us at 9mo with Maggie.

  • I read the Weissbluth book in addition to the Ferber one.  Ferber was a better fit for our family, and it worked by the second night.  Baby 411 has a great section on sleep where they compare different sleep training methods based on how well/quickly they work.  I would take a look if I were you - it was a great resource for us and helped to show that only a couple of the techniques have high ratings.  GL!
  • I thought Ferber's book was helpful. I also read Happy Sleep Habits Happy Child (Weissbluth), which just made me feel like a bad parent because my kid's nap schedule wasn't ideal. The No Cry Sleep Solution was slightly useful, but her techniques didn't really work for us.

  • I tried No Cry Sleep Solution, I really wanted it to work...but it didn't work for us. I read Ferber and that's what worked for us.For us it was about 4 nights at 6 months, but it only took about 20 minutes when he was that young. When we had to "redo" it in January after lots of illness it was a little longer, but still SO worth it.

I know lots of people who are now all about the Sleep Lady, , but I don't know much about that. She does have a pretty extensive website though, https://www.sleeplady.com/ . I also like the comparison of all the methods in Baby 411, but don't know if she is in there or not, I've got that book and Ferber both out on loan to a friend!
