Do most toddlers go through this?

.. the not listening stage. M does not listen at all or at least 90% of the time. We use very stern voices and he ends up giggling. Is this a phase? Will he start listening at least 50% of the time?? It is getting so frustrating.

  • Yup! A does that now. She even covers her ears and looks away.

  • 100% normal.  And it will probably get worse before it gets better.  Giving choices and picking my battles are the best weapons I've discovered so far.

  • Q listens shockingly well...but only when my mother or MIL are around!  Then I feel like an idiot when I'm saying "This kid never listens," only to have him make a liar out of me!

It's the nature of the beast.  They test their limits, see how far we will let them go, and are learning cause and effect.  And forget it if we ever cave in!  Then they just keep pushing to see what the breaking point is.  To top it all off, Q just learned "no" and "mine" in this awful whiny voice.  I'm going insane between that and the not listening!

  • DS NEVER listens....okay, that's not true.  He might listen 5-10% of the time.  He laughs at me when I get upset, he rolls his eyes as he smiles and looks away.  It's so exasperating.

Definitely normal.  It *might* last through age 5, at least.  Just sayin'.
