PW- got C's ASQ results, not all super news

A month ago I posted that I was a bit concerned about C's verbal development and Jill (and Fu) suggested I complete an ASQ questionnaire for her.  I finally got the results back and it looks like there is an area of concern ("Results in the areas of Communication and Problem Solving are below the cutoff for typical development and may indicate that development is not on schedule at this time.")  Fine motor and personal social all were above cutoff, aka on schedule, and gross motor was on the low end of normal.  (She's crawling like a nut, working at pulling up, going from lying to sitting, etc. now though so I'm not especially concerned.)  Anyways it looks like I was right (which makes me sad, but glad to know at least so we can get her on track.)  I'll definitely be mentioning it at her 9 month check next week.

Early intervention is the best thing you can do for your little peanut, even with minor delays. You did the right thing having her tested, S! Always trust your mommy instincts. Most of the time they are dead on. What is your next step after getting these results? Whatever you choose to do, know that you are making the best decision for Charlie! ::Hugs mama:: I know it is hard to hear that your child is not typically developing, but you are a terrific mama for dealing with this so quickly.

  • Can you really make those kind of assessments at 9 months?  We keep hearing how every baby is different, and while Isaac isn't talking AT ALL, I figured it was fine because he's been going gang-busters on the gross motor stuff.  I understand different babies focus on different stuff, but they mostly equalize by 18 months.

And where can I get my hands on an ASQ?  :)

  • Is the ASQ the ones you fill out yourself?  W has his follow up on his speech delay this week.  They do also work on one thing at a time, so if she has been doing lots of new gross/motor skills, she might catch up pretty quick.  Keep us posted on how her appt goes, that was where W's delay showed up.

  • Good for you for being proactive, lady!  Just wanted to tell you that if you ever have questions or want a referral to an early intervention center (you don't have to wait for your ped to give you one), just pm me on facebook - I'd be happy to answer questions, give info, or just listen...

This.  All of my little kids are behind on one thing or another and they excel in other areas.  The girls big ones were feeding and social/emotional.  Khloe came out of social/emotional but Katie is still behind.  Just when I think how far behind one of them is and work on it, they sail ahead.  Ryan couldn't get himself into a sitting position until recently even though he could stand on his own.  Keep us posted!

At 9 months almost no kids are actually talking... they should be babbling though and making noises... so yes you can assess it in some ways, but like you said, it also might not be anything to worry about yet.... worth talking to your ped about if you're concerned.   Both of my boys were always a little behind on the communication section on the ASQ deal but way far ahead on the motor skills.   My ped always said not to worry unless they didn't start doing xyz in another couple of months... and they always did.   Usually they did whatever the questionnaire wanted them to do about 2-4 weeks later.  So I'd be on the brink of worrying, then they'd be ok.

  • Thanks for the support and feedback.  At this point I'm just going to chat with the pedi about it next week and see what she has to say.  I do know every baby has their own timetable, but as she's not been super advanced in other areas (I'd call her average in most things) I don't see it as necessarily owing to getting ahead on other skills.  I might be crazy, but I did feel like she was trying to say the mama sounds tonight.  It was more like "eh-meh eh-meh" than mama but there was a definite consonant aspect to it which was encouraging.  I kept saying "mama" to her and she seemed to be mimicking, so who knows.

On the plus side, I think she's very advanced in being super awesome, cute and lovable in every way, so there's something. :)
