don't stress me out daycare

I mean seriously, it's hard enough to put DD in daycare...  Things seemed to be going fine this week.  We've asked them to feed her every 2 to 3 hours (and to not go over 3 hrs) b/c I didn't want her routine getting screwed up or her getting lost in the shuffle and missing feedings.  Mon through Wed went fine.  Then Thurs came... I picked her up, and everything seemed fine.  When we got home, I looked at the daily report and she was fed at 8, 10, and then not again until 4.  I could not believe it.  6 hours between feedings is unacceptable.  I called over there to see what was going on, but the teacher who is there most of the day had already left.  DH is heading over there this morning (DD isn't in daycare today) to talk to them about it.

Ughh, this just makes mommy guilt even worse.

  • Yikes! My DD goes 6-7 between feedings at night but the longest she'll go during the day is 3-4 if she's taking a long nap. And you better believe she's screaming for food when she wakes up!

Hopefully they just forgot to write it down? Indifferent

I wish that was the case, but they sent home 3 empty bottles and 2 full bottles.  So she missed 2 feedings.

  • Hmm.. I wonder if she napped through one of them? It could have been that they forgot she was on a schedule and she didn't cry for the bottle. I wouldn't worry this time, and just talk to them calmly to remind them.

I tell my daycare to feed on demand. I feel like it makes it easier on everyone (and I know some mother's are real strict about schedules). My DD makes it obvious when she is hungry (she cries, eats her hands, etc). This way they don't have to worry about looking at the clock (they have plenty of other babies to attend to as well), and I don't have to worry that she is going hungry. But my DD is also only in daycare for 3.5 hours a day. I know feeding on demand isn't for everyone, but I have found being flexible at daycare makes me, DD, and the teachers happier and more at ease.

  • No, she didn't nap through it b/c her diaper was changed several times in that time frame.  I purposely did not want them to just feed on demand b/c DD is a good baby and I didn't want her to get lost in the shuffle.  She doesn't scream when she's hungry and there's undoubtedly, louder babies in the room.  So, that's why I made sure to have her feed every 2-3 hrs... she always did that at home anyways.  She eats more frequently during the day b/c she sleeps long stretches at night (10-11hrs)... she's got to get the calories in sometime!

The thing that made me mad was that they did not even offer her a bottle in those 6 hours.  To me, that's unacceptable.  She is only 3 months old.  DH went and told them exactly that.  They were apologetic and assured him it would not happen again.   He told them if it did, we will pull her out.  He got a little heated b/c they tried to make excuses about a different teacher being there yada yada.  He just said that basically we don't want it happening again.

Oh well... time to enjoy the weekend!

Oh don't get me wrong, I totally agree that it is unacceptable, and that if you want her to be fed every 2-3 hours, they better do that.

I guess I like to be the mother all the teachers love, because, as bad as this sounds, I feel like they will give my daughter more of their attention if I make everyone's experience enjoyable by being flexible. So far it has worked because I have never gone to pick her up and not have someone rocking her, or paying her attention. I totally believe in the saying, "you get more with sugar than you do with vinegar." (one of the reasons why in my first post I said "calmly" talk to them :)

Anyway, enjoy your weekend, put your feet up, and don't worry, I am sure they got the message and that it won't happen again.

  • Calm was definitely the intention!  I don't believe in going to someone and blessing them out.  That's not the type of parents we want to be anyways.  DH just got a little worked up when they started with excuses (that didn't make any sense).  Overall, though, he didn't yell and was able to get his point across without being an as$.

  • If this had happened several times, yes I would be mad.  But if this was the first time no.  You really have to put your trust in them.  Maybe look at other daycares or a nanny.

When DD was 5mnts old the daycare told me that I had not packed enough bottles for her.  They let her go from 12 until 6 without a bottle.  I was pissed that they didn't even call me.  I knew that I had packed all her bottles that morning but then I started doubting myself.  The next morning when I was dropping her off another parent had two of my bottles.  I had packed enough and they gave her bottles to another LO.  She wasn't there much longer before I changed daycares.

I don't feel guilty at all for putting my DD in daycare.  When she started kingergarten this year she was far more advanced then kids who did not attend dc.

This brought tears to my eyes! Luckily I don?t have to deal with daycare, and after this I hope I never have too!  I don?t blame you for taking her out of there!!

That's why I love how my DC does bottles and diapers. On the wall above the high chairs/feeding area eat kid has a poster that gives the kid's feedings whether it be bottles, snack/solid food etc. then they have a dry erase board with all the kids on it (grid style) as we drop off our kids they hang up tags with their names and a picture of each LO. then they write when eat kid is due for a diaper and feeding.  so that way the 3 teachers in the room can stay on top of who's due for what. PLus when the float teacher comes in to cover the regulart teacher's breaks she knows what's going on.

at first they let my LO sleep through feedings( (she was sleeping 4hour stretches) but i just told them i'd rather she be woken up because then we have better nights with her (she was getting days and nights confused). and we haven't had a problem since :)
