Dryer Balls

Does anyone use those dryer balls?  Would you recommend them? I guess they keep fabric soft by bouncing around in the dryer and don't really have any actual fabric softener in/on them, is this right?  DH has on a few occasions added a dryer sheet to the CDs out of habit so I was thinking if we did away with the dryer sheets totally then I wouldn't have to strip diapers every couple of weeks.

Re: Dryer Balls

  • I have 4 homemade wool ones.  They do help with softness and are supposed to cut static a little, though the best thing you can do for that is not overdry.  I had to hide our dryer sheets on the other side of the basement so we wouldn't add sheets on autopilot.

If you want CD-safe fabric softener (you're right that the balls don't contain any) you can try Ecover.  It's a liquid that you add in the final rinse.  Just don't use it on PUL.

  • I use wool dryer balls.  I have 6 smallish ones I got off etsy a few months back, and just recently got 4 more HUGE ones from Lucky Hank on etsy.  I REALLY like these.  For big loads, I just throw all 10 in.  I use dryer sheets for most of my clothes, but not for towels or CDs.  I always do a load or two of towels before CD prepping at this point, so the dryer balls are already in the dryer.

Thanks for the wool recs ladies.  I just ordered a set from Lucky Hanks. :o)  She mentions adding essential oils to the balls if wanted.  Have you done this?

  • I haven't, I'd love to.  You can buy some EO yourself at a whole foods type place.  It doesn't last forever, depends on how many loads.  It just leaves a nice scent on your laundry (supposedly), again - I haven't tried it, but I know other ladies have!
