Stanky! Umbilical Cord

Little man's u/c stump stinks!

Anyone else ?

Our hospital pede told us not to clean it with alcohol, our regular pede said we could if we want but it isn't necessary.

I mean I'm sure dead flesh doesn't smell good but man this is really gross.

Also, at what week or day did your LO's stump fall off?

  • wesleys fell off at like one and a half weeks...and it smelled horrid. we used alcohol swabs to keep it from getting infected bc it was bleeding...they definitely helped. his belly button looks great now, isnt bleeding, and best of all...no nasty fish smell.

I think Olivia's fell off at 19 days.  I ended up putting alcohol on it the last two days.  It was gross and smelly.

  • LO's fell off at 10 days. It should not stink, that is a sign of infection. Is it red at all around it? I would call the ped.

No it isn't red. It had a little discharge at our appt on Tuesday and he said that was normal.

  • DS's smelled awful. I was really concerned so I called the Dr and they said that it was normal and okay. But it was really nasty.

His stump fell off at exactly 1 week.

Same here.  However, I was told by my ped that it should not smell and to call the office if it had a foul odor.

Our ped said a smell with no redness or dischargevwas fine. You have a scab that is healing which can be stinky. M not sure why some pecs say use alcohol and others don't personally I'd follow the directions your Dr. And ball means call them to alleviate any concerns you have. Also, they told us the alcohol is not to prevent infection but to help in drying.

I'm tempted to take a closer look at D's and see if it smells... but I have a feeling I'll regret it so I'm trying to refrain!  We've been using alcohol but from what I understand it's not really to keep it clean but to dry it out.  The pedi has us moving the stump around and getting the alcohol all under/around it so it dries out faster.

Naturally, I only remember to do this every few days (instead of several times a day) so his stump is still there.

  • Half of DD's feel off just before 3 weeks and the rest is still in her belly button.  It smelled horrible and I asked the pedi and he said I wasnt cleaning it well enough to start using alcohol more often and to air it out and it was much better.

  • his fell off at 7 days. They told us to clean it prior with alcohol 3X a day.... not sure why your dr. said not to..... i've heard this from everyone. It never was stanky either....

  • We were told not to use alcohol on Audrey's too. I don't think her's smelled though, at least not that I noticed. She lost it I think at 10 days and it bled for a few days after that. We actually tool her to the walk in clinic because it was looking a bit red to us but the dr said it looked good.

  • she still has hers at 3 weeks, 2 days.  we were told to completely leave it alone, no alcohol, no wiggling.  pedi said if it didn't detach on its own by 3 weeks to come in.  now we've been told to lift/wiggle it and alcohol it.  pedi thinks it began to detach but then readhered, and now she has a small granuloma underneath it, which they're going to take off with silver nitrate once the stump is off.  with our next lo, we'll be wiggling and using alcohol from the beginning.

  • LO's looks like it's about to come off.  He's 6 days old.  They didn't give us any specific instructions for it; just said that it would fall off soon.  We had an appointment on Thursday and the doctor looked at it but didn't say anything so I'm assuming it's progressing fine.  It naturally gets wiggled around above his diaper and when we handle him.  We haven't detected any smells at this point.
