should I be worried? re: hearing

We have L's 4 month appt. on Monday so I fully intend on talking to the doctor about this, but I just wanted to get perspectives from you all.

We are worried about L's hearing. He does not turn his head when we talk to him (nor does he do it for my mom and dad, the other 2 voices he hears the most). We can be right next to him saying his name and talking to him and he does not turn to look. We've talked to him from a whispering to a shouting and he doesn't look. If we are in front of his face and talking to him he seems to respond, he will smile and usually "talk" some,  but I'm not convinced that means he can completely hear us. What would you all think? Anyone have an experience like this?

Re: should I be worried? re: hearing

  • While I'm not sure if it is something to worry about, I feel like he should turn when he hears your voice.  At my DS appointments, the nurse always asks me a series of question and one has to do with hearing.

Does he get startled if you are behind him and clap?

I wish I had more/better info for you.  Good luck!

  • I agree with the pp about clapping or other loud noises.  If he doesn't startle then I would be more worried, I wouldn't worry as much about turning to voices, now that I think about it I don't feel like DS did that at that age either, he didn't start to recognize his name and look at me when I said it until much later (maybe 6 months?).  So he could be hearing you but just not interested :)

  • Has he had many ear infections? DS had/has mild conductive hearing loss due to all the fluid that was constantly built up in his ears from all the infections he had. We went and got a hearing screening done at Children's and that is when they recommended that he get tubes. Even after getting the tubes he still cant hear 2-3 of the 5 tones but they think that we just arent getting an accurate measurement since he is a squirmy 13 month old now. It would definitely be worth getting another screening done. GL and keep us updated!

  • He does jump if you yell boo when you're behind him so I know he hears that, but he responds better to noises we make with our mouth rathewr than talking and it makes me wonder if he hears the vibrations from the noises rather than the actual noise. I really hope I'm just being paranoid.

He actually hasn't had any ear infections, he is congested a lot though. I never thought that maybe that could be messing with his hearing. He has his appt. tomorrow so I will definitely keep you updated! Thanks for the input ladies!
